should be able to go back and forth when we need supplies.â
âI have everything I need for my experiments,â Tesla said, âexcept for a few other things that will be delivered. Other than that, weâd just need food and coffee and other sundries.â
âShouldnât be a problem,â Clint said. âNot if thereâs a store in Gunnison.â
âWhat about those fellows from back there?â Tesla asked.
âWeâll keep watch tonight,â Clint said. âThey wonât travel in the dark, but they may show up tomorrow, depending on how bad the injury was.â
âThis is just the kind of thing I do not need,â Tesla said. âOnce we reach the house, I will need to concentrate on my work.â
âIâll make sure youâre not interrupted,â Clint said. âWhat about the other items youâre having delivered. Where are they coming from?â
âDenver.â
âThat means theyâll take the same route that we took today.â
âSo they will have to go through that same settlement,â Tesla said. âThey may have trouble with those men like we did.â
âMaybe they wonât be there,â Clint said. âOr maybe they learned their lesson today.â
âI am now thinking that it was a good idea for the President to send you to watch over me,â Tesla said. âYou proved that today.â
âWell, letâs just hope it doesnât go any further,â Clint said. âIâll take the first watch. You get some sleep.â
TWELVE
Roman Troy sat with his left hand around a shot glass of whiskey, and his right arm in a sling. His partners, Donnie Ward and Lefty Cole, sat across from him. They each had a glass of whiskey and were keeping quiet. Neither of them wanted to be the object of his anger, which was like a black cloud, ready to unleash a torrent.
âHeâs not gonna get away with this,â Roman said for the hundredth time. Heâd started at the doctorâs office while the man put his arm in a sling, and he had repeated himself many times since then.
âWe can get âem when they come back this way, Roman,â Donnie said.
Roman glared at him, and Donnie wished he hadnât spoken.
âWhen they come back? I ainât waitinâ that long,â Roman snapped.
âButââ Lefty started, then stopped himself, hoping Roman hadnât noticed.
âBut what?â Roman demanded.
âUm, we donât know where they went.â
âWell, weâre gonna find out.â
âHow?â
âThat fella with the ax handle, he went into Doyleâs tent, right? If he bought somethinâ, maybe itâs beinâ delivered.â
âYeah, maybe,â Donnie agreed.
âWell?â Roman said.
Donnie and Lefty stared at him.
âGo and find out,â Roman said, crashing his left fist down on the table.
Â
Both men jumped to their feet and ran out of the tent. âNaw,â Doyle said. âHe didnât buy nothinâ, and wasnât sellinâ nothinâ.â
âWell then,â Donnie said, âwhat was he doinâ in here, Doyle?â
âLook, fellas,â Doyle said, âI donât want no trouble. I just wanna sell my supplies.â
âThere ainât gonna be no trouble, Doyle,â Lefty said. âNot if you tell us what you know.â
âI donât know nothinâ,â Doyle said. âI tolja.â
âHe didnât come in here for no reason,â Donnie said. âAll he left with was that ax handle.â
âYou mean to tell us he came in here just for an ax handle?â Lefty said.
âWell, no butââ
Donnie reached out and grabbed the front of Doyleâs shirt and said, âBut what?â
âH-He did say somethinâ about Gunnison.â
âWhat? They were goinâ to Gunnison?â
âIâI
