way.â
âWithout protection?â
âWeâve got protection.â
âJust you?â
âIâm enough.â
Roman exchanged a glance with his cohorts. Clint took the opportunity to move even closer. He thought he was now within reach with the ax handle.
ELEVEN
âYer pushinâ it, friend,â Roman said.
Clint lunged forward with the ax handle and buried it in the manâs stomach. As Roman doubled over, Clint snatched the rifle from his hand and tossed it back to Tesla, who reacted just in time to catch it.
âDonât,â Clint said, pointing with the ax handle at the other men.
âYer makinâ a big mistake, mister,â Donnie said.
Roman straightened up and went for his gun. Clint swung the ax handle again, got the man on the forearm before he could draw his gun. There was a loud crack as the bone in his arm broke, and then Roman was holding his arm and howling.
âThis town got a doctor?â Clint asked the other two men.
âYeahââ Donnie started.
âBetter get your friend over there,â Clint said. âWeâre going to be on our way. I hope we donât cross paths again.â
âYou better hope that,â the third man said.
He and Donnie moved to either side of Roman and helped him away from the buckboard. They looked back over their shoulders a couple of times before they committed to taking Roman to the doctor.
âThat may not have been a good idea,â the storekeeper said to Clint from behind.
Clint turned and held the ax handle out to the man to give it back.
âKeep it,â the man said. âYouâre pretty good with it.â
âThanks.â
Clint climbed up next to Tesla, set the ax handle beneath the seat, where Tesla had also replaced the rifle.
âIâm sorry,â Tesla said. âThey surprised me.â
âItâs okay,â Clint said. âLetâs just get moving before they come back with help.â
Tesla flicked the reins at the team.
âHow far do we have to go?â he asked as they pulled away from the settlement.
âA dayâs drive,â Clint said. âWe probably need one more night on the trail, and then weâll reach Gunnison tomorrow. How much farther will the house be after that?â
âA few hours, according to the man I rented it from,â Tesla said.
âWho did you rent it from anyway?â
âAn agency,â Tesla said. âI saw the ad in the Denver newspaper.â
An agency, not an individual. That meant any one of a few people could give away their location.
He turned and looked behind them, saw that at the moment no one was following.
âDo you expect more trouble from those fellows?â Tesla asked.
âI guess that depends on how badly I hurt that manâs arm.â
âI thought I heard a bone crack.â
âSo did I.â
âSo if heâs that hurt, he wonât come after us.â
âJust the opposite,â Clint said. âIf I broke his arm, heâs going to want his revenge.â
âWell, I assume you can handle them,â Tesla said. âYou certainly did just now.â
âWeâll have to see,â Clint said.
âWhy didnât you shoot that man when he tried to draw his gun?â
âI didnât feel I needed to,â Clint said. âIâm not anxious to kill a man at any time, but I donât even know this one. Hopefully, he learned his lesson and weâre done with him and his friends.â
âI hope so.â
Â
They traveled a few hours more and then stopped to set up camp.
âSorry we couldnât get a meal back there before leaving,â Clint said, handing Tesla a plate of beans.
âDonât worry about it,â the scientist said. âI was just glad to get away from there.â
âThe storekeeper there said thereâs a general store in Gunnison,â Clint said. âWe
