    Even though I was
reassured that they were never together, I still felt a little irked. I didn’t
want to think about Mathis kissing or holding another woman. Just thinking
about it caused acidic jealousy to bubble up in my stomach. I knew Kathryn was
an incredibly attractive woman – I’d just have to believe that it was all a
show between them. It bothered me to think of it any other way.

    “Do you really think
that the crime group will try anything?” I asked. I had stopped drawing my
pattern on Mathis’ chest, and now I was peering anxiously at his face, trying
to read the expression there. He was frowning, but I couldn’t detect any sign
of dishonesty in his face. As far as I knew, Mathis had never lied to me – only
tried to keep information from me to stop me from worrying.

    “Since I’m ‘dating’
Kathryn, I’ll be helping out a lot in her father’s campaign,” Mathis said.
“Since he’s so prominent and popular, they are unlikely to have any sort of
show-down in public. If they do try anything, then they’ll be caught red-handed
in a public setting. It’s much more plausible that they’ll try to seek me out
in private, so I’ll just have to find a way to lure them out.”

    “That…sounds
dangerous. Will you be ready for them?” I paused nervously.

    “Don’t worry about
me. I’m smarter than I look,” Mathis teased. I couldn’t help but smile at his
warm expression. “So long as you’re safe, that’s all that matters to me.”

    ***

    The sky was brightening,
and I realized we had been in Mathis’ office most of the night. I toyed with
the idea of staying a little longer, to spend as much time with Mathis as
possible before he reinforced the ban on spending more time together. However,
I had my own job to get to and I needed to shower, change, and brush my hair
and teeth before anything else. I didn’t want to slip through the streets in
the morning looking like I’d been up all night. I wanted to get home without
drawing any attention to myself.

    With great
reluctance and a few false starts, we finally got up and I hunted in all the
corners of the office to find my clothing, slightly rumpled but still
presentable enough. Once we were both fully clothed again, Mathis gave me one
last long, lingering kiss. It was so sweet that I almost cried. The expression
in Mathis’ eyes was hard to read – it looked almost as if he was angry with
himself, but there was desire in there as well, and longing. But maybe I was
just speaking for myself. I set the thoughts aside; trying to read Mathis’ mind
was like trying to read hieroglyphics.

    I avoided going
down the fire escape and made my way down the much more comfortable elevator
and saw myself out. It wouldn’t have been wise for Mathis to see me to the
front in person since someone could’ve been watching.

Jennifer & Philip

Chapter 2

    Jennifer assumed
he'd just been amused by how silly she looked in his shirt but the moment she
walked into her apartment, she realized what he must've been looking at when
Rachel's mouth dropped with one look at her.

    Jennifer had
completely forgotten about what Philip had been doing to her neck.

    “Jen?” Rachel could
barely get the word out.

    “I'll be right
back.” Jennifer rushed into the bathroom. She face palmed in embarrassment when
she saw her reflection. She was going to need serious make-up assistance
tomorrow, she thought as she tilted her head. All down one side of her neck
were the dark marks made by Philip's mouth. After a moment's hesitation, she
unbuttoned the shirt and unhooked her bra. “Well shit, Philip.” She muttered.
She was going to have to make sure the blouses she chose the next few days had
high enough necklines to hide her spotted skin. At least she wasn't going to
have to try to figure out how to segue-way into a conversation with Rachel.

    When Jennifer
walked back into the living room, Rachel was sitting on
