the piece-of-shit Ford.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” she yelled. She struggled not to fall on the gravel as Alex pulled her out and Charlie reached over to support her until she found her footing.
“What the fuck?” the driver cursed, opening his door and coming around the truck. “Who the fuck are you two?”
“We’re the guys who are gonna kick your ass and then call the cops!” Charlie yelled.
    “Oh yeah, what for?”
“For kidnapping a minor,” Charlie spat.
“Minor?” the asshole asked, turning to look at Allie. “You told me you were eighteen.”
Allie shrugged belligerently. Since her mother had been diagnosed with cancer, Alex had watched Allie fall further and further into self-destructive behavior. Her pride in her appearance had disappeared and rather than the clean-cut, pretty girl next door he’d grown up with, she’d turned into the Goth queen from hell.
“She’s sixteen,” Alex answered as the man’s eyes narrowed.
“Fuck, man. I didn’t know. Lying bitch said she wanted a ride to the next town.”
Charlie’s fist flew and connected with the bastard’s jaw before Alex could jump in and hold him back.
“Don’t call her a bitch!” Charlie shouted.
“Cool it, Anderson! Just get Allie and let’s go.”
The man looked as if he wanted to retaliate for the punch, but taking a closer look at the two young men ready to take him on, he seemed to reconsider.
“Fuck this shit. I’m outta here.” He got back in his truck and stomped on the gas, throwing gravel back at them in his rush to get out of the secluded parking lot.
Allie whirled on them in anger, but Alex was unwilling to hear any of the poison she seemed ready to spew. She’d nearly left town with that asshole. God only knew what would have happened if they hadn’t found her. “Don’t say a word!” he shouted. “Your sister is out of her mind worrying about you. You were supposed to be home hours ago.”
“Oh no, Ginny the good daughter is upset! Gosh, I really do feel bad now.” Her words dripped with sarcasm. She’d been driving all of them crazy with her reckless behavior lately.
“You little smartass,” Alex muttered. “You’re acting like a spoiled, selfish princess.”
“Fuck you, Taylor!” she cried out.
“What’s going on inside that pretty head of yours, Allie?” Charlie asked softly.
She sucked in a breath at Charlie’s kind question and Alex could see she obviously hadn’t expected tenderness. Tears formed in her eyes before she turned away from them and Alex cursed his own harsh words.
“I’m not going home and you two can’t make me,” she whispered.
“Oh we can’t, huh?” Alex asked, more than prepared to throw her ass in the car if she took one step in the wrong direction.
“This is none of your business! Shouldn’t you two be packing for college? Go away and leave me alone.”
“No,” Alex answered simply. “Get in the car.”
“I…I can’t go home.” She turned and looked at Charlie, ignoring him. Alex knew she wasn’t quite sure what to make of him and he suspected deep down she preferred Charlie to him. “Please, Anderson. I c-can’t go home.”
    “Why not?” his friend asked.
She looked down at the ground.
“Allie, why not?” He repeated Charlie’s question, concern and worry overwhelming him.
Tears sprung to her eyes and angry, pain-laced words flew from her in such a rush, he struggled to understand her. “I can’t watch it anymore! God, I’m not strong like Ginny. I never have been. I can’t watch my mother die! I can’t stay in that house and hear her crying from the pain or throwing up because of that fucking chemotherapy. I can’t watch my dad and Ginny act like she’s getting better when I know she’s not!”
She turned away from them for a moment and Alex could see her shoulders shaking as she tried to choke back the sobs building in her slight frame.
When she turned back around, the previous pain in her gaze
