kidding. You know.â
I stared hard into his eyes, studying him.
He made a face at me. He stuck out his teeth, crossed his eyes, and made his monkey face. The face that always cracks Mom and Dad up.
Then he laughed. âStop staring at me like that. Iâm fine. Really. Iâm perfectly okay. Whatâs wrong with you two?â
Addie and I exchanged glances.
âIâm fine. Iâll show you!â Peter cried. He started jumping up and down on the couch cushions. Then he leapt to the floor and did a wild tap dance. âSee?â
Addie and I both laughed. âI think heâs definitely back to normal,â Addie said.
I still felt shaky. âPeter, you remember where you are now? You remember our names?â
âDuh,â he said.
âHeâs back to normal,â Addie sighed.
Then his expression changed. âDid you really hypnotize me?â he asked suddenly. âI felt kinda weird for a little while. Kinda dizzy or something.â
âIâI donât know what happened,â I told him. âBut Iâm glad youâre okay. Youâre not dizzy now, are you?â
He shook his head. âI feel great.â
âThen you can go,â I said. âAddie and I have to practice our act.â
âWhy canât I hang out with you?â he asked.
âPeter, you promised,â I said.
âIâll be quiet. Really,â he insisted. âYou wonât even know Iâm here. Please please please?â
Addie rolled her eyes. âHeâs definitely back to normal.â
I gave Peter a shove toward the front stairs. âOut of here. You promised youâd leave us alone if I hypnotized you. Now, beat it.â
He grumbled some more. Then he headed up to his room, taking the stairs two at a time, slapping the banister loudly with each step.
I turned and saw that Addie was at the front door. âIâd better go,â she said. âThat was kind of weird. I know you donât feel like rehearsing our act now.â
âI never want to hypnotize anyone again,â I said, shaking my head. âEven if itâs pretend.â
âThatâs just it,â Addie said. âIt was pretend, Danielle. You couldnât have hypnotized your brother. You couldnât.â
âThen what happened to him?â I asked.
Addie frowned. âI ⦠I donât know,â she murmured. âAt least he snapped out of it. That was scary for a minute or two. Hey, Iâll call you later.â She hurried out.
I closed the door after her. Then I just stood in the hallway trembling. I couldnât get that horrifying picture of Peter out of my mindâsprawled there so lifelessly as I shook him and shook him.
âGet it together,â I scolded myself. âEverything is fine now.â
I took a deep breath, pushed that picture from my mind, forced myself to move. Gripping the banister tightly, I pulled myself up the stairs, then down the long hallway to Peterâs room.
The door was closed. I leaned close and pressed my ear against the door.
Silence in there.
My heart began to race.
Why was it so quiet in there? Was he really okay? Peter was never quiet.
I raised my fist and knocked on the door, harder than I had intended. âPeter? Itâs me.â
No reply.
âPeter?â
I pounded again. Still no answer. So I twisted the knob and pushed open the door. âPeterâ?â
He was sitting in front of his computer with his back to me. The computer was on, the monitor screen flashing bright colors and the name of the game, Tomb Raider . No sound. He had a game controller gripped in one hand.
I took a few steps into the room. âPeter? Didnât you hear me?â
He turned slowly. The red and yellow lights from the monitor screen reflected eerily in his glasses. I couldnât see his eyes.
âPeterâ?â
âHi,â he said finally.
