for the walls,â Jade explained with sweeping gestures.
âBut of course,â Nina teased, mimicking her.
Jade, once a struggling painter, was now internationally known for her Caribbean- and Japanese-influenced paintings. Her marriage to Sean, a retired NBA superstar, had catapulted her into the spotlight and her art into the homes of Hollywoodâs rich and famous, the lobbies of Ritz Carltons worldwide, and countless office buildings. She was also the owner of the Jade Kimura Gallery in Beverly Hills, a birthday gift from Sean the first year they married.
Jade made a face at Nina. âIâve been working on a special collection for The Diamond.â
âShe wonât let anyone see it,â Keisha protested.
âSean hasnât even seen anything, so donât think youâre not special. You can see everything when Iâm done,â Jade declared.
âWeâre also going to have a separate shop where youâll be able to purchase the fellasâ basketball gear.â Keisha was too pleased.
âWe know you want everyone to come here to buy Eric Johnson basketball gear. Thatâs what all of this is really about,â Nina teased with a twinkle in her eye.
âThat is so not true.â Keisha tried to look surprised.
âOh please.â Topaz waved a perfectly manicured hand in the air. âEverybody knows how much you love you some Er-wick.â
If anyone did know, it was certainly Topaz. She was there from the beginning. During a trip to New York for a photo shoot, Topaz met Sean, who was celebrating his birthday with Eric. Best friends and teammates, both of the guys were single then. When Eric laid eyes on Keisha, it was love at first sight.
âMiss T canât leave home without Germain. Iâm surprised to see you here,â Keisha fired back. âDid the good doctor have to work today?â
Now it was Topazâs turn to play confused.
Jade laughed. âYou guys are both stuck on stupid when it comes to your men.â
Nina looked at Topaz. âI know you donât want me to start talking about you.â
âI donât know what youâre talkinâ about. Iâd never miss Girlfriend Day,â Topaz countered.
âPleaseâ¦â Nina folded her arms and looked at Jade and Keisha. âDid I tell you guys about the time Topazâ¦â
âI hope The Diamond is a big success, yâall,â Topaz cut in. âIsnât that food ready yet?â
There was more laughter as Jade led them to a table set with the most exquisite hand-painted china. The brushstrokes, in rose, black, and just a hint of gold, were obviously Japanese.
âJade, this china is exquisite.â Topaz picked up the plate to further admire it.
âThank you.â Jade poured sparkling ice water into glasses.
âThese are beautiful, J. Did you get them at Neimanâs?â Nina ran her finger around the golden rim of her dinner plate.
âI made those,â Jade said, and spread a crisp white napkin in her lap.
Keisha closely inspected the pieces in her place setting.
âGet outta here! You really made these?â
âUn-huh,â Jade said nonchalantly. âFor my ceramics class at Spelman.â
âYouâre kidding.â Topazâs face registered her shock. âGirl, you are the most creative person on the planet.â
âThese dishes should be in Neimanâs.â Nina poured more champagne.
Topaz looked at Jade and couldnât help thinking about the insecure girl Sean married and the sophisticated, confident woman she was now. Sean was once madly in love with Topaz, who was very attracted to Seanâs celebrity, not Sean.
âYou guys. Thank you, but forget the plates. Focus on whatâs about to be served on the plates.â Jade was always the epitome of elegance, even in a pair of jeans. Her hair was pulled back into a single braid with bangs cut bluntly across her
