determined to destroy him.â
âIâm protecting Giada, a young woman who called me sounding frantic and worried. And Iâm protecting you, even if you donât see it yet.â He punches a number on the phone, obviously calling her, and at this point, I have to expect the worst from Giada. But if I stop him from calling, it will only make him more suspicious. Considering I donât know the laws of Rome, I canât be certain what will constitute his freedom to enter the castle, which means I canât be certain what he will do next, either.
But remarkably, Giada doesnât seem to be answering the call, and with each passing second, I can breathe easier, while Galloâs jaw sets a bit firmer, until finally he removes the cell from his ear. âShe didnât answer, and my concern for her safety constitutes my right to enter the castle. Weâre going inside.â He doesnât wait for my agreement, walking toward the castle, and I tell myself Matteo is watching; heâll stop Gallo before he gets too far. But what if he doesnât?
I start to pursue while my cell phone rings. Praying itâs Giada and I can get her to call off Gallo, I glance at the caller ID and find Kaydenâs number. I stop walking and punch the âanswerâ button to hear Kayden say, âWhy the hell are you with Gallo?â
âHe was standing in the driveway, intending to stop you from leaving, and you said people die when Raul gets uneasy. Kayden, listen to me. Gallo claims Giada called him, frantic over trouble in the castle.â Gallo starts up the front steps. âAnd right now, heâs headed to the front door with the intent of going inside.â
âMatteo wonât let that happen.â
âHe has yet to show himself.â No sooner than I say the words, Matteo steps onto the porch. âOkay, I was wrong. Matteo just headed him off at the door.â
âAnd the police chief is about to call Gallo.â
âThank God,â I say, air gushing from my lungs. âHeâs trying too hard to get into the house for comfort.â I shove fingers through my hair. âI canât believe Giada did this.â
âSheâs a problem I canât ignore any longer.â
âArenât you supposed to be in your meeting?â
âIâm about to walk in now.â He changes the subject. âYou protected me and The Underground.â
âYou doubted that I would?â
âYou pulled a gun on me,â he reminds me yet again.
âBecause of the blood, and the necklace, and the moment.â
âI can explain the photo.â
âGood. I want you to.â I glance toward the porch again, and report, âGallo just gave Matteo his back and took a phone call.â
âThen itâs about to be over,â he says. âI have to go now, but if you need me, really need me , call me. Iâll find a way to answer. But be sure itâs an emergencyâand take Giadaâs damn phone from her.â
âHappily,â I say, and the idea of hanging up and maybe never seeing him again has me grinding out, âDonât get killed. Iâm the only one who can kill you. Understand?â
âToday is not the day I die, or the day Gallo wins.â
âPromiseââ The line goes dead and my stomach knots. Heâs about to negotiate with a kingpin, and considering Gallo is charging toward me, I canât even fully digest that reality. I stuff my phone back in my pocket and step forward once again, meeting him halfway.
âWe need to talk,â he announces.
âTalk about what?â
âYou,â he replies, âand believe me when I say that youâre going to want to hear what I have to say.â His cell phone starts to ring in his hand. He glances at the number. âI have to take this call.â He steps around me.
Turning, I am stunned to discover heâs heading toward
