arm wrapped round Valkyrieâs waist.
âHi, Fletcher,â the twins said in unison.
âHaving a good christening?â he asked. âIâve never been to one and I have to admit, it seems kind of⦠well, boring. But in a nice way.â
âI found it really boring too,â Carol said before Crystal had a chance. âAnd I didnât understand most of what the priest was saying.â
âI wasnât even listening,â Crystal said. âIt was something about babies, I think. I really like your hair today. You have it sticking up really nicely.â
âDonât encourage him,â Valkyrie groaned. Fletcher laughed, and gave her a quick kiss.
âUnfortunately,â he said, âwe have to go for just a moment.â
âWe do?â Valkyrie asked. He nodded to her, all serious. âAh,â she said. âOK. Yeah. Guys, we have to go.â
Carolâs eyes widened. âIs there trouble? Are we in danger?â
âIs the world ending?â Crystal asked. The twins looked up at the church ceiling, like they were expecting to see it crack and fall in on top of them.
âDonât worry about it,â Valkyrie said with a chuckle. She headed over to her parents, Fletcher beside her. âThey donât have to worry about it, do they?â
He shrugged. âIâm sure theyâll be OK for another few days.â
âDid you find Bernadette Maguireâs house?â
âSkulduggeryâs there right now, waiting for me to return with you.â
She grinned at him. âWas it a nice drive?â
âIt took two hours,â he grumbled. âAnd he wouldnât let me speak. Do you know what itâs like to be driving for two hours and not be able to speak?â
âNo. Whatâs it like?â
âItâs boring.â
She nodded. âI could probably have guessed that.â
They reached her parents, and Valkyrieâs mum lit up when Valkyrie passed her Alice.
âHere she is,â her mum said, cooing at the baby, âmy special girl.â
âOh, cheers,â Valkyrie said, rolling her eyes.
Her mum laughed. âHello, Fletcher, when did you get here?â
âI just arrived,â he said. âSorry. The bus service on a Sunday is awful.â
âYou should have called us â Desmond could have picked you up.â
âNo, I couldnât have,â Valkyrieâs dad said, stepping into earshot. âSorry, Fletcher, but I had important fatherly duties to take care of, which included eating breakfast, showering and finding my trousers. Of those three, I only managed two. Without looking down, can you guess which one I missed?â
Valkyrieâs mother sighed. âDes, itâs too early in the day for your nonsense. Fletcher, will you be joining us for the post-christening lunch?â
âYes, I will,â Fletcher smiled back. âI just have to borrow Stephanie for a moment.â
âTake our daughter,â Valkyrieâs dad said, waving his hand airily. âWe have another one now.â
Valkyrie laughed, leading Fletcher through the crowd. They left the church and walked round the corner. When they were sure they werenât being watched, Fletcher turned to her, kissed her, and the moment their lips touched, they teleported. The church and the grass and the sunshine vanished, replaced by a cottage being lashed by rain.
Valkyrie broke off the kiss instantly and leaped sideways to the Bentley, which was under the cover of a tree. Fletcher joined her.
âThe sun is splitting the stones in Haggard,â she said, glaring. âDonât you think staying dry will be kind of important for when we teleport back?â
âYou make a good point,â Fletcher conceded. âSee, thereâs a reason why youâre the girl and Iâm the boy. You think about things, while
