down.
âWell, quit working on it and do it.â
âYeah, I will. A woman who looked like a model was in here flirting with me.â
âDid you ask her to the dance?â
âNo, sheâs not in high school.â
âYouâve always got an excuse,â Zach says. âTalk to Kyra.â
âDonât worry. I will. Bye.â
I go back to the mattress and pull the cover over the foam. Itâs easy for Zach to ask Kate. Heâs good-looking. He drives a new truck. Heâs got lots of girls who want to go out with him. Iâve got a fresh zit on my chin. Iâd have to ask Mom to borrow her old Civic. And I donât know if Kyra would say yes.
We watch game tapes Sunday night in the small gym at school. Zach and I grab folding chairs from the cart and set them next to each other. Everybodyâs in a good mood after the win.
Sepolski pauses the tape on my interception. âYou D-backs, watch how Manning takes away the slant and jumps the ball. Thatâs smart football.â
Getting a compliment from Coach in front of the team always feels good.
Someone farts loudly in back.
âIs that you, Jonesy?â Sepolski asks.
âYes, Coach. Iâm having digestive problems.â
âYouâre the Superstar.â Laughter echoes in the room.
Then Stahl takes over and focuses on the trap. He runs it over and over telling us how to recognize it, defend it, and stop it. âWhat do we want to hold our opponents to?â
âZero,â we say.
âWhat?â
âZERO.â
âThatâs better.â
At practice Tuesday, second offense is going against first defense. Fox, the backup quarterback, dings his finger on a helmet and goes to the trainer. Jonesy, the starter, comes in to replace him.
âDown, set, hit.â Someone jumps offside.
âPay attention,â Sepolski snaps. âRun one play right, and weâre out of here.â
âDown, set, hit.â Jonesy drops back to pass, and I cover Stillwell in the flat. Tyson Ruden, the tackle, breaks free.
âGo get him, big fella,â Sepolski hollers.
Tyson grabs Jonesy, spins him like a doll, and flings him to the ground.
âYou okay, Fox?â Coach calls. Jonesy is crumpled up holding his right shoulder. âFox, are you hurt?â
âItâs not Fox,â I say. âItâs Jonesy.â
âNo, no!â Sepolski runs over. âJonesy, are you okay?â
Jonesy grimaces and shakes his head. Coach Stahl runs in and blows the whistle. âBreak it up, men. Hit the weights.â
I walk in with Zach. âI canât believe Coach sent Tyson after Jonesy.â
âLetâs hope itâs not bad,â Zach says.
chapter eight
Itâs bad. Jonesy has a separated shoulder. So bad, heâs out for the season.
âJonesy didnât come to school today,â Zach says.
âCan you blame him? Would you after your seasonâs been destroyed because Coach sent Tyson after you?â
âCoach didnât know it was Jonesy.â
âI know.â I slam my locker. âBut that doesnât help him. That doesnât help us.â
The buzzer sounds and I hurry to history.
âTake out your homework,â Halloran says. I arrange my notes on my desk. I canât imagine Jonesy being out. Since middle school, heâs been the leader. I feel a surge of fear. Whoâs our leader now?
âOkay,â Halloran says. âGive me some reasons your ancestors came to America.â
âTo have their own land.â
âTo give their kids a better life.â
âTo join other family members.â
Kids are shouting out answers and Halloranâs writing them on the board.
âTo escape religious persecution.â
âTo dodge the draft,â Strangler says. Everybody laughsbecause Stranglerâs a skinny guy who wouldnât be much good in a fight.
âLetâs see some
