doomed! Weâll be in his control by supper-time! Itâs too late! All is lost!â
Mrs. Ryan frowned. âWell, thenâPlan C!â She dashed back to her jeep and snatched her combat phone. âI want the top-secret weapon! Yes, thatâs right! What? Oh, it is? When did that happen? Uh-huh? Oh, well, maybe next time. Bye-bye!â
âThat didnât sound good,â said Liz.
âWhat is the secret weapon?â asked Holly.
âItâs a nuclear-powered negative proton beam thatââ Mrs. Ryan stopped. âWait! Itâs top secret! Forget what I just said. And thatâs an order!â
Jeff knew what this was all leading to.
Him. By himself. Alone against the crazy alien.
Klatoo leaned over the top of the tower. His head buzzed wildly from its new power.
âItâs no use, Mom,â Jeff told his mother sadly. âKlatoo is super smart and powerful. And his creatures are on the way. Thousands like him.â
âMillions!â said Mike. âMaybe billions!â
âTheyâll take over our minds,â Jeff went on. âTheyâll make us all aliens in our own town.â
A shudder ran through the troops of soldiers.
Mrs. Ryan looked at Jeff. âI didnât want to resort to Plan D, but now thereâs no choice.â
âExcellent! Thereâs still hope!â said Sean. âWhatâs Plan D?â
Mrs. Ryan called her troops together. âPlan D. RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!â
âBut M-M-M ⦠Mom!â stuttered Jeff.
Within seconds the streets were empty. The army was gone. The tanks were gone, the trucks were gone, the jeeps and jets were gone.
Mrs. Ryan was gone.
The kids were alone.
Klatoo stared down from the giant alien tower. He began to laugh. He tapped a futuristic watch on his green wrist.
âTen minutes, Cosmic Boy!â
He laughed some more. An ugly, alien laugh, that drifted down slowly, along with the weee-ooo-weee-ooo sounds of his accordion.

Showdown!
S ean turned to Jeff. âCan you do this? I mean, can you defeat the evil Mezmo-Headed dude?â
The lights on Jeffâs plastic helmet blinked as he looked at Sean and the others. One after the other, each of his friendsâSean, Liz, Holly, Mikeâgave him hopeful nods.
âI guess I can,â said Jeff. âI mean, Iâll try.â
Sean beamed. âAll right! The kid is turned on and ready for action!â He looked at the others. âSee? What did I tell you?â
Mike frowned. âI still donât think weâre going to make it this time. Those aliens are going to force us to listen to accordions all the time.â
âListen, guys,â said Jeff. âWeâve got to short out Klatooâs head before he sends any more signals to the others.â
âShort out?â said Holly. âHow? You saw how his helmet sucked in that huge explosion. Heâs super smart and super powerful. I think maybe weâd better do like your mom. You know, Plan D?â
Jeff took a deep breath. âThereâs got to be a way to short circuit that helmet. Heâs probably just a normal everyday alien without it.â
âRight!â said Liz. âNormal.â
Suddenly Jeffâs helmet buzzed and blinked and whirred as he stared at the giant tower. âStand back!â he shouted. âA plan is beginning to form in my brain!â
âGo, Cosmic Boy!â Sean cheered. âA plan!â
Jeff shut his eyes tight and pinched his temples. Blue sparks flew off his helmet. His face glowed. His fingers felt electric.
âYes â¦â said Jeff. âGood ⦠okay ⦠really? Got it!â
He turned to his friends. âThereâs only one way to stop Klatoo. Letâs put on a show!â
âA show?â said Mike.
Liz was staring at Jeff. Suddenly her face brightened. âIn school. The stage in the auditorium. Jeff, youâve got something up your
