the last man who’d taken her that way, and the heat swiftly snuffed out, leaving her cold and doubtful again.
God, she was never going to be able to do this.  And if she couldn’t do it with Noah, who was spread out on the bed like a virgin sacrifice, she wasn’t going to be able to do it with anyone.
Shaking her head, she turned away, then hugged her arms to her chest.  She was pathetic.  She’d thought she was ready for this.  To move on, but—
“What happened?” he asked quietly.  “You were into it.  Into me.   What did you remember?”
“This isn’t going to work,” she said.
He paused for a couple of seconds, then said, “A little early to give up, don’t you think?  Because I think you’re stronger than that.”
She whirled around and pointed at him.  “That’s the problem.  You don’t know me.”
“You’re wrong.  I know you’re beautiful.  Brave.  A good friend.  I know someone hurt you in one of the worst ways a man can hurt a woman, but you haven’t let him destroy you.  You’re not giving in to it.  You want to live again.  Fuck again.  Maybe even love again.  You said yourself there’s a man you want and you aren’t letting your fear of sex stop you from going after him.”
Lord, he was talking about Stavish, but he had it all wrong.  She ran her hands through her hair.  “This is crazy.  Why are you even wasting your time with me?”
“My dick isn’t this hard because it thinks you’re crazy, Jenna.  I want you.  I want in you.  The question is, are you going to let me get there?”
He still hadn’t moved.  Despite the intensity of his gaze, his body was relaxed.  He was so beautiful.  All over.  She stared at his face and those amber eyes that glowed with passion and goodness, but her gaze was continually drawn back to two things: his hands and his penis.  They could hurt her— he could hurt her—
“He took me anally,” she confessed.  “I—I don’t want that.  Not ever again—”
Understanding swept over his expression.  “You’re getting ahead of yourself, sweetness.  We’re starting with a kiss, remember?”
“But you heard me, right?  You won’t try to…you know.”  She waved her hand in an all-inclusive gesture.
“I swear to you, Jenna, we won’t do anything unless you want it to happen.”
His voice was adamant.  Firm.  She believed he meant what he said.  But it was so hard to trust.  Once a man’s control snapped, he was capable of doing things even he thought he’d never do.  She’d trusted before, only to be betrayed.  How could she ever open herself up to a man again?
“Just a kiss, querida .  Please.  I’m dying to feel your mouth on mine.”
She took a bracing breath.  This guy was too good to be true.  He was making himself completely available to her, and she couldn’t even kiss him?
Tentatively, she walked closer.  Part of her waited for him to pounce.  To remove his hands from behind his head and pull her to him.  He didn’t.  He just smiled.  “That’s right, sweetness.  Come here and give it to me.  No taking, just you giving, you understand?”
She sat on the bed beside him.  Placed a hand on the ball of his shoulder.  He hissed and closed his eyes, but before she could pull away, he said, “I’ve dreamed about you touching me.  At night, you’re all I’ve been able to think about.”  He opened his eyes again, their golden depths luring her even closer.  “Have you dreamed about me, too?”
She wasn’t sure she should tell him, but… “Yes,” she whispered.
He smiled again, drawing her gaze to his mouth.  His lips looked so soft while the skin beneath her palm was rock hard.  Hot.  Would his mouth be hot, too?
She suddenly couldn’t wait another minute to find out.  Slowly, she leaned down until her mouth hovered over his.  And still he didn’t raise up to take the kiss he so clearly wanted.
    “Yours for the taking,
