of it.â
âSheâs your biggest weakness,â Tom explained. âSince Vale couldnât complete his mission, I have no choice but toââ
âValeâs still alive,â I said, peering around Daneâs thick biceps.
âAri,â Dane all but growled.
I shifted so that I was concealed behind him again. âIâm just pointing that out.â
âYouâre wrong,â Tom said. âHe is dead.â
âBut the snakesâ¦,â I muttered.
I was sure my rapidly beating pulse wasnât good for my current condition, yet I couldnât slow it or pull in a full breath. Fear slithered through my veins. This was not a scenario Iâd ever anticipated any of us finding ourselves in.
âKyle, move over there with them,â Tom instructed.
âNo!â I cried out. âLeave him out of this! Let him goâplease!â
âShut up, Ari,â Kyle grumbled. âAs if Iâd walk away.â He joined us and swiftly pushed me backward, behind him, so I had a double layer of protection.
Tears stung my eyesânot just because of the massive scare factor of knowing that ominous red dot was now on my husbandâs forehead and that Kyle was in equal danger, but also because I was monumentally pissed off at how Tom had turned on all of us.
âIf Vale is dead,â I managed to say, âthen who put the snakes on the patio?â
âI donât know,â Tom told us. âSomeone from the society network. I left the gate open while you were all out last night and turned a blind eye.â
âYou son of a bitch,â Dane said.
âI had to do as instructed.â
âBut thereâs no Lux!â I shouted, the anger getting the best of me. âItâs over. Itâs all over !â
âNo,â Dane reasoned. âBecause Tom here has compromised the entire society network by telling them Iâm still alive. Right?â
âI havenât told anyone anything. Only took the directive and said Iâd eliminate Ari.â
âThis doesnât make any sense,â I contended, trying to see around the two brick walls protecting me. âIf thereâs no hotel, what is the point in continuing this attack on us?â
âItâs the principle of the matter,â Dane explained. âThey destroyed the Lux as a last resort. The ultimate statement. But they didnât get the checkmate they sought, because Iâm the one who produced all the evidence for the indictments. Thatâll be confirmed for them today, thanks to Tom. And if he doesnât take my queen in this living, breathing game of chess, heâs a dead man. Arenât you, Tom?â
âIâm glad you understand. This isnât what I want,â the security guard said. âBut I have to do whatâs required of me.â
âProblem is,â Dane countered, âIâm the knight protecting the key component of your strategyâand youâre not getting to her.â
âI donât want to shoot you, Dane. But have no doubtâI will. In the leg or the shoulder. Whatever it takes to get you out of the way. Kyle, too. Ariâs the mark.â
I swallowed hard, understanding the motivation here was to cripple Dane for his involvement. Not physically, but emotionally. By taking his family out. Right before his very eyes.
Iâd had enough exposure to the shady side of the secret society to accept that those whoâd crossed the line did so with the full intention of going all the way to get what they wanted. Empires and legacies were at stake. And even those who were simply the soldiers within the network had so much to lose or gain, so much to shelter, that theyâd allow themselves to be manipulatedâas Tom hadâjust to get their piece of the pie.
It was sickening. Chillingly frightening. But not exactly a new world order. It was a different kind of gangster warfareâthe
