strong.”
“This is a fucked up situation.” I nod my head in agreement.
“Why don’t you go home and rest? Clear your schedule this weekend because it’s going to be an all weekend affair. We have to get there early Saturday afternoon when they aren’t looking for party crashers and wait until its dark to make our move. We probably won’t get back until early Sunday morning and I need you to keep up with me.”
“Don’t worry about me. I’m ready. I’ve been ready since she was first taken.”
“Good. I’ll call you tomorrow with a list of things we are going to need and a meeting spot.”
“You really think they’re still looking for you?”
“I don’t know but until I have Sierra tucked safely away in her own bed and out of that bastards clutches I don’t want to give anyone reason to suspect and start looking for me on a hunch.”
“Right. This fucking sucks. Is there anything I should let mom and dad know?”
“No. Don’t tell them anything. I don’t want them to think we are getting her right away. It could be we have to wait until next month and it will be hard for them to deal with knowing we can get in there but haven’t yet saved their daughter. If you need to tell them something just tell them we’re close and I am working my ass off to make sure I get her home to them as soon as is safely possible. And tell them to continue taking flowers to my grave.” Ever since they had that fake funeral for me I know it’s been hard on them trying to make everyone believe I’m dead and that they are mourning me so whenever they leave a new set of flowers for me and take the old ones out of the vase I make sure to leave a letter for them to read when they get home. It’s the best I can do to ease their worry.
“Dude. They take you flowers every week. Even I don’t get that much love from them.” I’ve never told him that I leave notes for them knowing he wouldn’t understand. He gives them updates telling them that I’m ok and I’m being safe but it’s just not the same. I can’t ask him to tell them how sorry I am that I couldn’t save Sierra from being taken a second time or that I hope they will forgive me for my mistakes and that even though they are not my real parents I love them and think of them as my parents. Instead I write it down every week in a letter with something new that is going on with me. Usually it’s nothing more than just what I learned from Lois, the old lady I live with, but it’s something that’s coming from me.
“That’s because I’m the favorite. Sorry to tell you.”
“Fuck you.” We laugh a carefree laugh that I hadn’t done in months. I don’t even think I’ve smiled since waking up from my coma. Maybe knowing that the end is near and rescuing Sierra is going to happen real soon is making me feel happier and more relaxed. I don’t know but it’s a nice feeling.
“See you later.” I pull him into a man hug patting his back before releasing him and heading to my car while he rolls the plans up and heads to his. Doing a mock solute we both head our separate ways back to our houses.
One step closer to bringing Sierra home.
One-step closer to having this all end.
One-step closer to finally, finally being happy.
