word. We all dropped to the ground, and the push-ups were counted off.
Sergeant Kevin blew his whistle, and everybody froze in place. Weâd been running dribbling drills for the past forty minutes with no stops.
âLetâs take five minutes for a water break!â
âGood,â I gasped. âI need some water. I think Iâve lost a couple of bottles worth of sweat.â
âNow that sounds attractive,â Kia said.
âYouâre sweating just as much as I am,â I said, pointing at her sweat-soaked T-shirt.
âThatâs where youâre wrong. I donât sweat, I
glow
.â
âIn that case youâre glowing so bright we could turn off the overhead lights.â
We joined in a lineup to get bottles of water. We shuffled forward. JY and Johnnie were passing them out.
âWorking hard?â Johnnie asked Kia.
âHard enough to work up a good sweat,â I said, âor a good glow.â
âKia, Nick, come on over here!â JYD called. He was standing beside the Sergeant. We trotted over, water bottles in hand.
âI want you to meet somebody,â JYD said, gesturing to Sergeant Push-up.
âWe sort of already know who he is,â Kia said.
âBut do you two know
who
this gentleman is?â Jerome asked.
âSergeant Push-up,â Kia said.
JYD chuckled. âThatâs one of his names. This is the man that taught me everything I know about basketball.â
âBut I thought your father taught you everythingâ¦â Now it all made sense.
âThis
is
my fatherâ¦Mr. Johnnie Williams Junior.â
He shook both our hands. âJerome told me all about you two,â Mr. Williams said.
âHe has?â I asked.
âSure, I always tell my father about my Dog Pound members,â JYD said.
âAnd we know a lot about you too,â Kia said.
âHowâs that?â Mr. Williams asked.
âJerome and Johnnie talk about youâ¦and how you taught them basketball.â
âAnd about life,â I added.
Mr. Williams smiled. âThe life part is what makes me the happiest. Iâm proud of what my boys have done on the court, but a lot more proud of what they do off the court.â
âCan I ask a question?â Kia asked.
âSure,â he said.
âWeâre always willing to answer questions,â JYD said.
âI was just wonderingâ¦please donât take offence or anything,â she said.
âNow you got me interested. What are you going to ask that could get me offended?â JYD asked.
âWellâ¦I was just wonderingâ¦are you going to be here much this week?â
âOf course, I am,â he said. âItâs my camp.â
âYeah, I know, but we heard that some celebrities only show up for a few hours,â Kia explained.
âThatâs not the way we run things around here,â Jerome said. âIâll be here all day, every day, from the start to the finish.â
âCould I ask a question too?â I asked.
âOf course,â JYD said.
âSince youâre going to be here every day, from the start to the finishâ¦I was just wondering, this morning, were you and Johnnie really late?â
âYou saw us come into the gym,â JYD said.
âI saw you come in, but were you really late?â I asked.
âWhy would you think differently?â Sergeantâ Mr. Williamsâsaid.
âItâs just that we saw an Escalade in the parking lot that looked like yours,â I said.
âThere are lots of Escalades in the world,â JYD replied.
âI said that,â Kia agreed.
âAnyway, why would you think that theyâd come in late if they were already here?â Mr. Williams asked.
âTo set an example,â I said. âYou wanted everybody to see that the rules are the rules,â I answered. âFor everybody.â
âExactly! That makes perfect sense!â Kia said as
