strangersâall crushed in together.
âOkay, everybody, on three yell, âHard work,ââ JYD said. âOne, two, threeââ
âHard work!â we all screamed and threw our hands into the air.
There was a burst of conversations and laughter as everybody started toward the bleachers. It was like all the words that hadnât been used throughout the day rushed out.Interestingly that was the only rush. Nobody was moving very fast. Maybe it was because we were too tired or just reacting to the fact that we couldnât take our time during the dayâat least not without paying for it in push-ups.
âSo did you have a good time?â my mother asked as we reached the bleachers.
âGood, but tiring,â I said.
âTiring doesnât start to describe it. Iâm bagged,â Kia said.
âToo bagged for a little sightseeing?â my mother asked.
âThe only sight I want to see is a hotel room,â Kia said.
âNo, first dinner, and then the hotel room,â I added. âAlthough, maybe we could take a nap before dinner.â
âSounds like they really worked you today,â she said.
âIâm exhausted,â I said.
âThatâs good to hear,â came a voice from behind me. It was Jerome.
âWeâre not complaining!â I protested.
âDidnât think you were,â JYD said. He and my mother shook hands and exchanged greetings
âWe like to think that we work the kids pretty hard,â JYD said.
âNo pain, no gain, right?â I said.
âThatâs what I hear, although itâs pretty hard to believe that when youâre going through the pain,â JYD said.
âWe can handle it,â Kia said.
JYD smiled. âNever had any doubts about that. Are you having fun?â
âActually, a lot of fun,â I said.
âDespite how tough it is?â he asked.
âMaybe
because
of how tough it is,â I said.
He gave me a questioning look.
âItâs not just a camp on learning about basketball,â I said.
âAnd we are learning,â Kia added.
âBut weâre being pushed to try harder, to be more than we were when we walked in the door,â I said.
JYD put a hand on my shoulder. âThatâs good to hear. We like to think that this camp is about more than just learning about basketball.â
âI was wondering,â my mother said, âif you can tell us where we could find a good hotel close to here.â
âI could, but I wonât be doing that,â he said.
What did he mean?
âYou three are going to be my guests. Youâll be staying at my home with my wife and me.â
âYour house?â I gasped.
âIt would be rude of me to invite you all the way down here to my boot camp and have you stay in some hotel.â
âThatâs a kind offer, but we can stay at a hotel. We donât want to put you out,â my mother said.
âThat wonât be a problem at all. Johnnie and Sergeantâwell, my younger brother Joshuaâ are staying with us as well.â
âDo you still have space for us too?â my mother asked.
âThereâs room for everybody,â JYD said.
I was thinking that he probably did have a pretty big houseâhe was in the NBA.
âI donât knowâ¦we really donât want to impose,â said my mother.
âYou wonât be imposing.â
âWellâ¦â
âPlease, Mom,â I pleaded. How cool would it be to stay at Jeromeâs house.
âYeah, please,â Kia added.
She looked at both of us and then up at JYD. âThank you for your very kind offer. Weâd be happy to stay with you and your family.â
Chapter Five
âAnd turn left here,â I said as I read out the directions to my mother. âThis is the street.â
She slowed the car down and turned.
âThis is quite the neighborhood,â Kia
