against the rest,

“And what does Isa have to say?” asked a distant cousin.

“Me? I support my elder brother in all things.” replied Isa.

“We are not asking you who you support; we are asking your opinion on the matter. The past is past Isa, you have been forgiven. You are the son of the King, a Prince. Your opinion matters. What do you have to say?” insisted another distant cousin.

Isa was torn; he knew exactly what he had to say. He knew everybody in the room was incorrect. But if he did say his piece, it will ruin his life. This he can accept but he no longer lives for his own now. He cannot ruin his life and Tricia’s at the same time. But, his cousin is right, he is the Prince, it is his duty to vote on the matter.”

    “I.. I…” started Isa.

“Let us not press my brother. I speak for all my brothers in this matter.” said Hasan.

“No you cannot,” argued one of the uncles. “Every person in this room is entitled to a vote, especially Hasan as the representative of the departed Queen.”

“I am the only Queen here Uncle!” shouted Hasan’s mother and first wife of the King. It was no secret that as much as the Family loved Isa’s mother, they hated the King’s first wife.

“I will speak,” Isa said. Everyone fell quiet again, Hasan tried to interrupt but he was restrained by his own younger brother.

“Though my heart breaks in saying this, our family needs a head and our country needs a King and it is no longer our Father. I agree with you all. But the solution is not the formation of a Regency Council but the succession of a new King.”

“Impossible! Our father is still alive, incapacitated yes, but not dead. Succession implies that our Father is no longer alive, that there is no chance for him to live again!” Hasan angrily said. The younger relatives nodded in agreement but the older ones seemed uncomfortable.

“You are correct brother and the purpose of a Council is to elect a new King out of a pool of worthy candidates.”

“Yes, yes Isa we all know that. Are you saying we skip making a Council and elect me immediately as King?”

“Yes and no brother,” Isa replied.

    “Stop talking in puzzles Isa!”

“Yes brother, we can already dispense forming a Council but no, you cannot be elected as King.”

Other family members gasped at what Isa said. Some thought that the rebellious Isa is back and toying again with the family. Others though, again the older ones, seem to nod in agreement. Hasan noticed their nods but chose to ignore them. He pressed on,

“What on earth are you saying?! I am the King’s son!”

“As am I brother but unlike you, Father gave me this,” with that Isa raised his right hand, stretched out his fingers and the plain gold but familiar ring on his finger was unmistakable. He removed it and placed it in the middle of the round table. All squinted their eyes to see and confirm the writing on the inner side of the ring.

Written in Arabic characters and roughly translated to English,

“Among my children, you are worthy above all.”

It was the ring passed on from one Al Khalifa King to his chosen successor. A Regency Council only existed to elect a King when the previous King was not able to choose an heir. It was a failsafe mechanism to avoid any internal disputes. Since the King gave Isa the ring in full control of his capacities, the ring represented the King’s absolute command. Isa was right, forming a Council was unnecessary and since everybody voted that the throne is vacant, the son, chosen above all others is the natural successor.

Hasan’s knees became weak and he sank down to his chair. All other relatives became silent, except for the Queen, who protested. However, everyone knew, even Hasan and the Queen that the decision has been made. The King already made the decision for them.

Each member approached Isa, bowed deeply and asked
