groaned at the thought of the ensuing scandal,
but to allow a footman’s child to inherit the estate? Never!
    “Well, my father said
my behavior was inappropriate. I didn’t think so, I liked it!”
    He stared at her hard.
    “But father said these
are things young ladies are only allowed to do when they are married.” Leaning
back in his seat he closed his eyes, what had he done? “Father said, that I was
much more suited to the marriage bed than the debutante balls, and it was
inevitable that I would instantly disgrace myself in London…I have far too much
enthusiasm for everything tactile and…I can hardly wait to…”
    “Stop!” he shouted.
    She
was seated across from him again now where she could look into his eyes, about
to continue her ceaseless chatter. He put a warning finger to her lips, she
kissed it and laughed. He rolled his eyes.
    “Does it bother you so
much?” she asked, capturing said finger, and holding his hand in hers.
    “Yes!” he roared. “Of
course it bothers me!”
    “Oh,” she said looking
disappointed. “I had been led to believe that gentlemen liked that kind of
thing.”
    He
wanted to stop the carriage, get out and ride away from her as fast as he
could. This had to be some kind of nightmare didn’t it? Wynne was meeting him
in a few days, after he got her settled at the estate he planned to return to
London, he’d have to cancel that now, he would turn the carriage around, take
her back to her father…
    “Father said…”
“ Father said !” he roared. “I’ve heard more than enough about what
your father said!”
    Looking down he
realized that she was still holding onto his hand, but her grip had slackened finally
at his tone, and her eyes were suddenly brimming with tears. “I am sorry, but
when I described the feelings I had to… my father ,” she said defiantly,
she was upset but apparently undaunted by his anger. “He simply refused to take
me to London…”
    “What feelings?” he
couldn’t help himself he had to ask.
    “The tingling
sensations I get when I look at a handsome gentleman, when he holds my hand, or
kisses my cheek, it sweeps through my entire being! I feel weak, my knees turn to India rubber and…”
    “You
told your father this?” he asked stunned.
    “Well,
who else should I tell? I have no one else. That is why I had to ask Jenna my
maid for help. I overheard her talking to the other maids about one of the
footmen, he was very handsome and I thought…”
    “You thought what?” he
asked incredulously.
    “That he would be
willing to share…”
    “Share what?” he
demanded breathing hard, he wished she’d just get to the point, his chest was
pounding and he could feel the blood rushing through his veins. Any moment now
his heart would give out, he was certain of it. Unless his head blew off his
shoulders first! Her hands rested on his knees, she leaned forward and looked
at him beseechingly.
    “I thought you would
understand…”
    “Understand? That you
are carrying another man’s child?” he yelled.
    Her squeal was
unexpected and his eardrums suffered for it. “They told me I couldn’t get with
child from that !” Her hands flew to
her face.
    “They?” he asked
horrified.
    “The maids…the
footmen…”
    “What exactly have you
done?” he gasped, “And with how many?”
    “Shall
I show you?” she offered peeking mischievously through her parted fingers.
    “NO!”
he bellowed, finally understanding why her father had refused to take her to
London. He’d have to fire all his footmen…maybe even the butler, the
grooms…anyone under ninety.
    “I am mystified, how
this could happen, so easily,” she said, allowing her hands to fall back into
her lap, her finely arched brows knit together in a puzzled frown, her head on
one side she reminded him of one of the puppies he’d had a child. Except that
she evidently was not so sweet and innocent.
    Dare put his head in
his hands and they rode in ominous silence for a
