together. âShe canât just take him away from you!â
Tessâs lips, almost bloodless in her pale face, quivered. The eyes that met his were tragic. âYes, Rafe, yes, she can.â
âDonât give me all that martyr stuff, Tess. You donât actually believe itâs in Benâs best interests to live with Chloe, do you?â he grated incredulously. âYou know Chloeâthe novelty will wear off within a couple of months and where will that leave Ben?â he intoned heavily as her eyes slid miserably away from his. âSo stop crying and decide how youâre going to stop her.â
The callous implication that she was behaving like a wimp really stung. âWhat do you think Iâve been doing? Whichever way you look at it, Chloe is his mother!â she reminded him shrilly. âIâm just a distant relation.â
âYouâre the only mother Ben has ever known.â
Tess choked back a sob and turned her ashen face away from him. âIâve been so selfish keeping him. I should have encouraged Chloe to take an active part inâ¦â The horror in her voice deepened as she wailed. âHe wonât know whatâs happeningâ¦God, what have I doneâ¦?â
Rafe dropped down on his knees beside her chair and took her chin firmly in his hand. âYou loved him,â he rebuked her quietly. âThereâs one person you havenât mentionedâ¦â
Tess looked at him blankly.
âWhat about the father?â
Tessâs slender back stiffened defensively. âWhat about him?â
âDoesnât he have some influence? I take it she does know whoâ¦â
âOf course she does.â
âHeâs been providing financial support?â
âHeâs not around.â
âYou could contact him and askââ
âHeâs dead,â she interrupted harshly. âHe died before Ben was born. Chloe is getting married, thatâs why she feels that now is the time to have Ben live with her.â
âWhoâs the lucky man?â
âIan Osborne.â
Rafeâs brow wrinkled. âThat name seems familiar.â
âIan Osborne the actorâ¦?â
Rafe shook his head.
âHeâs got his own seriesâ¦â
Rafe nodded. âThe medical soap.â
âDrama,â Tess corrected automatically.
âA canny career move on Chloeâs part rather than true love, I take it.â
âActually, sheâs besotted,â Tess told him gloomily. From their telephone conversation she had the impression that Ian Osborne had a lot to do with Chloeâs change of heart.
âYouâre such a cynic, Rafe.â
âBetter than being a victim.â
His casual contempt really hurt. âI am notâ!â
He was pleased to see the spark of anger in her eyes; anger was way better than that awful dull, despairing blankness.
âWhatever,â he drawled. âYou could convince this Osborne guy he doesnât want a kid around.â With a thoughtful expression he drew a hand slowly through his thick hair.
Tess stared at him. Only Rafe could come up with an idea like that and make it sound reasonable. âI donât think I want to know what machiavellian schemes are running around in your warped little mind. I need to do what is best for Ben,â she responded firmly, trying to sound braver than she felt. âI need to do what I should have been doing all along, I need to prepare Ben to go live with his mother.â
If it was going to happen sheâd have to put her feelings on the back burner and make this transition as painless as possible. And if Chloe and this Ian person made him unhappy sheâd make them wish theyâd never been born!
âYou canât prepare someone to lose the only mother theyâve ever known!â His hooded eyes were veiled as she stiffly turned away from him. âWhat we need is inspiration.
