business.â
âOf course it is,â Sara said, her blue eyes crinkled at the edges with concern, making her look so much like their mother. âYou still own your equal part. We shouldâve consulted you.â
She wasnât really helping their cause, but he wouldnât put it past the others to have talked her out of contacting him about this before hiring Bex.
âIf you have a problem with her working here, just say the word,â Kyle said. âWe completely screwed the pooch here, and weâll make it right, bro.â
By rescinding their job offer? Whatever history he and Bex shared, she didnât deserve that. Even if it was surprising that sheâd accepted it in the first placeâsheâd been eager to leave Ribbon Ridge five years ago and had done so in a hurry. âDid she apply for the job or did you guys ask her?â The answer mattered to Hayden, and it shouldnât have.
Liam answered. âWe contacted her at Dadâs behest. Heâs ready to lighten his load, especially with Archer splitting into separate entities.â
Liam was taking over the real estate arm and wrapping it into his Lion Properties, which heâd started in Denver with great success. His company would now be headquartered here, where he planned to live with Aubrey. The brewery side was going to be overseen by Derek, and they were expanding the operation from their chain of ten brewpubs to bottling, something Dad had been resistant to in the past.
âDad wanted her?â It wasnât the answer Hayden had expected, but it was probably the most palatable. And he shouldnât be surprised. Bex had interned with Dad after college, and he wouldâve offered her a permanent job if thereâd been anything open at the time.
âAdamantly,â Kyle said. âThis is a good step for him. With everything heâs gone through the past year and a half, weâve been hoping heâll at least semiretire. If we donât keep Bex, weâll have to find someone else he approves of.â
In other words, they needed Bex. And just like that, Hayden did what he always had: He rolled over and let his family rule. âItâll be fine. You offered her the job, sheâs here, Dad wants her, itâs all good.â Good? Sheâd be living here in Ribbon Ridge, working with his family, a constant reminder of the haze Hayden had lived in for four years as heâd struggled to get over her. The job in France was looking more attractive by the minute.
Oh fuck it anyway. They didnât need him here. They were running things fine without him, and back in Burgundy he was needed.
âI wasnât going to mention this until later, but it might relieve you to know that I wonât be here, so it doesnât really matter that Bex will be working here.â
âWhat do you mean?â Sara asked.
âIâve been offered the assistant winemaker position, and Iâm going to take it.â He hadnât decided until that moment, but yeah, it seemed the right choice. For someone who once thought heâd never leave Ribbon Ridge, he now wondered what it would take to lure him back.
Kyle shook his head. âWow, thatâs crazy.â He smiled and reached over to clap Hayden on the bicep. âCongrats, thatâs awesome. Iâm so proud of you.â
âThanks, but keep it quiet for now. I havenât talked to Mom and Dad yet. Iâm heading over there now.â
Tori flinched. âUh, just so you know, Bex will be staying in the garage apartment for a few weeks until she finds a place. The rental market is pretty tight around here just now.â
Hayden had been well aware of the real estate market in Ribbon Ridge before heâd left, and it didnât sound much different now. Real estate was a good portion of their family businessâthe one heâd actually worked for while theyâd all been scattered to the four
