themselves fantasized about committing the same kinds of acts. Was Ethan capable of such heinous crimes?
Putting the dossier on her nightstand, along with her fake ID, which had been tucked inside it, she picked up the letters and read them again. They were more than a decade old. She had no way of knowing if they still reflected Ethanâs thoughts and attitudes, but they gave her a glimpse into the psyche of the man heâd once been. He talked about Spahn Ranch, where Manson had lived when he ordered the murders. He compared it to a place heâd find for his own âspiritual family,â a place where he could âoperate beneath the awareness of the outside world.â Except for one letter, he ignored Mansonâs fascination with the Beatles and their music, but he quoted several of Mansonâs favorite verses from the Book of Revelation 9:2, 3.
And he opened the bottomless pitâ¦. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
âI have this power,â Ethan wrote. âI can feel it taking root in me. I can make scorpions of locusts. What would you have me do?â
Wishing she had Mansonâs reply, she flipped to another letter, this one dated August 4, 1998. Here, Ethan began by thanking Manson for his latest response and quoting Revelation 9:4.
And it was commanded [that the locusts] should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any greenthing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
âI have the mark,â Ethan informed Manson. âMy people will freely take it upon themselves. They will be Godâs avengers against the wicked. They will avenge you. â
That was where the brand came in, Rachel mused. He went on to quote verse 17.
And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.
âYou will be free,â Ethan promised Manson. âI will make you free.â Heâd closed that particular letter by quoting one last verse.
And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
âYou have passed that key to me.â
ââYou have passed that key to me,ââ Rachel repeated. What did he mean by that? Did he feel as if he was taking over where Manson had left off?
That was a terrifying thoughtâ¦.
She chewed anxiously on her lip as she read the only letter in the pile that had been written by Manson.
âYou know, a long time ago being crazy meant something. Nowadays everybodyâs crazy. And youâre crazier than them all.â
Some sort of drink had been spilled on the bottom half, making the rest impossible to read. That was disappointing, especially because Ethanâs next letter revealed growing frustration. It seemed to be in response to Mansonâs rebuke, or maybe thereâd been a letter or two in between; the dates were three months apart. The gist of what heâd written suggested that Manson wasnât living up to his prophet status, wasnât guiding young Ethan as he wanted to be guided. Ethan was getting angry.
âYou and all those Beatles songs, man. What was with that? What did the Beatles have to do with God? Youâre full of shit, you know? Yellow Submarine, my ass. Where were you when Helter Skelter started? Safe at the ranch.â
Did that mean Ethan would be a different kind of leader? One who actively participated instead of watching from afar?
âThe only thing you had right were the women. The women are where itâs at.â
Twisting her new wedding ring around her finger, Rachel read that line for the third time. Ethan had a fascination with women, probably because he felt
