groaning, struggling.
And thenâ¦there were only two of them.
Kristen and April sprawled beside each other on the ground. The blue-cloaked woman was gone.
Shaking her head, Kristen pulled herself up, panting hard. âAlmostâ¦â she choked. âI almost had her.â
âWhere is she?â April whispered, struggling to find her voice. âWhere did she go?â
Kristen didnât have time to answer.
âCongratulations, you two!â The girls heard a man shout. âYou won!â

âThe contest is over!â Donald Marks called. âYouâre the winners!â
Both girls jumped to their feet as Donald Marks appeared. Running hard, his bald head gleaming in the blue light off the rocks. The huge man tromped heavily as he ran, his fists pumping the air.
âKristen, where did that woman go?â April repeated.
Kristen stared straight ahead and didnât answer.
âI said you won! Arenât you excited?â Marks ran up to them. He stared at them, sweat pouring down his forehead. âWhat are you two doing out here?â
Her heart pounding, April stared hard at him. She struggled to think.
She suddenly found herself wrapped in a damp fog. The fog swirled around her.
She could feel it wash over herâwash through her.
A cold, cleansing fog.
It disappeared as fast as it had come.
April and Kristen gazed blankly at each other. Almost as if seeing each other for the first time.
âI donât remember,â she finally answered Marks. âI donât remember why we came out here.â
Kristen frowned and shook her head. âI donât remember either,â she said shakily. âItâs the strangest thing.â
A grin spread over Marksâs round face. âAt least youâre okay!â he boomed. âAnd we have a winner! Your team has won the bravery contest!â
April and Kristen exchanged glances.
âYou meanâ¦this was all part of the competition?â April asked.
Marks nodded, still grinning. âWeâve been watching you the whole time. And you two girls showed true bravery by venturing out here in the middle of the night. Congratulations, your team has won a hundred thousand dollars!â
âWhoa!â April cried. âYouâre not kidding? A hundred thousand dollars? IâI donât believe it!â
A smile slowly spread over Kristenâs face. She slapped April a high-five, then hugged her.
April stared hard at Marks. She still felt as if she were gazing through a thick fog. Her whole body was trembling with the effort to stand up.
Why did she feel so weak?
What were she and Kristen doing out in the middle of the night in front of the rock caves?
She couldnât remember.
Marks placed an arm on her shoulder. âApril? Are you okay? You donât seem very excited to have won so much money!â
âIâ¦I am,â she said. âI guess Iâm shocked. When you left the island, I thought you werenât coming back. I really thought thatâ¦â Her voice trailed off.
And then she remembered something else. âMarlin,â she said. âMr. MarksâMarlin is missing. This afternoon, heââ
âWe found him,â Marks interrupted. He turned and pointed down the rock hill. âOn the other side of the island. Marlin is okay. A few broken ribs.â
Kristen gasped. âButâwhat was he doing all the way over there?â
Marks shrugged his broad shoulders. âRick and Abby are taking care of him. Theyâve called for a chopper to take him to the main island.â
âButâwhat happened to him?â April demanded.
âWeâd better hurry,â Marks said. âAnthony is waiting at the dock. Letâs get to the boat and find you some food to eat. You must be starving.â
April nodded. I havenât eaten in two days, she realized. I guess thatâs why I feel so weak.
Marks glanced at the
