Heâs just too nice for his own good.â
âWhy does he stay with her?â Miriam asked.
Ruthâs eyes were hard. âBecause he
likes
her,â she replied flatly. âI think heââ
They heard Ruthâs mother greeting someone downstairs.
âHollyâs here,â Miriam said.
They heard fast footsteps on the stairs. Then the door to Ruthâs bedroom burst open. Holly stood triumphantly, a wide smile on her face.
âI just heard the most incredible thing!â
âWhat is it?â Miriam demanded.
chapter 5
H olly grinned. âAfter you left last night, the party got
good.â
âOh, so it stank as long as we were there?â Ruth asked.
âHa-ha,â Holly replied. âThatâs not what I meant.â
âSo?â Miriam prompted. âWhat happened?â
âFirst, some of Noahâs friends from Center City showed up. And they were totaled. Reeking of beer.â
âThat must have been the group we saw,â Ruth said.
Miriam nodded. âAnd knowing Meiâs parents, they probably had heart attacks as soon as the first guy stumbled through the door.â
âThatâs just the beginning!â Holly exclaimed.âRight after Meiâs mom kicked them out, she and Mei got into a
huge
fight. Weâre talking total blow-out!â
âWhat did they say?â Miriam gasped.
âIt was all about Noah, and how heâs irresponsible and a creep. But Mei kept saying it wasnât his fault. He didnât invite his friends. They just showed up. It got really intense!â
âThen what happened?â Ruth asked.
âDr. Kamata kicked everyone outâincluding Noah. So we go out on the lawnâand thereâs beer cans all over the place. Noahâs friends dumped them there after they got kicked out.
And
they toilet-papered Dr. Kamataâs car.â
âWow,â Miriam muttered.
âWhat then?â asked Ruth.
âWe had to leave,â Holly answered sadly. âBut I heard more later. After everyone left, Mei and her mother went ballistic. Mei was hysterical, screaming and crying that her mother treated her like a child, that she loved Noah more than anything.â
Miriam noticed that Hollyâs voice gained a slight edge on the word
loved.
Holly continued. âAnd guess what happened after that?â
Miriam and Ruth stared at her, waiting.
âMeiâs mother said that Noah could never set foot in their house again. And Mei canât see him anymore. She broke them up!â
âNo way!â Miriam cried. âThat is so unfair!â Holly didnât reply.
Miriam studied her best friend. Holly was almost glowing. Obviously she still had her eye on Noah. Sheâs probably happy about this, Miriam thought. But Mei must be
devastated.
Miriam felt terrible. She knew Mei was crazy about Noah. She would do anything for Noah.
Couldnât Meiâs parents see that?
âMei and her mother arenât speaking,â Holly added matter-of-factly. âMeiâs father is taking her motherâs side, but not very loudly. He probably hates seeing his little girl cry.â
âDonât be mean,â Miriam scolded her. âItâs not funny.â
âI know, I know. Iâm sorry.â Holly said quickly. But Miriam could still see the spark of hope in her eye. âItâs just ⦠I canât help thinking â¦â
âAbout Noah?â Miriam asked.
Holly nodded.
âIâd forget that idea if I were you,â Miriam said. âAfter this, I bet Mei and Noah are more of a couple than they ever were. Sheâs not going to listen to her parents.â
âI know.â Holly slumped down on the bed. âI wish I never heard these rumors.â
âThatâs a first,â Ruth muttered.
âWhat do you care, Ruth?â Holly replied angrily. âYouâve never cared about any guy
