another reason to disagree.
On the other side of the suite was a king-sized bedroom Ian had decorated with rose petals all over the floor and bed, and white taper candles on the nightstand. It was clichéd, but much more than Iâd ever expect from Ian.
âWhatâs up with you?â I asked, standing alone in the room with Ian after heâd closed the door behind us. âAnd why in the world did you lie and tell Scarlet I had a boyfriend?â
âI canât do this, Rach! I canât!â He threw the book onto the bed.
âCanât what?â I knew what I was thinking he was saying, but I needed to confirm that he was saying what I was thinking.
âI canât!â
âCanât what?â
âYou know I didnât even tell my parents? Who gets engaged without telling their parents? I canât. Theyâre gonna hate this. Theyâre gonna hate her. My mother hasnât even met Scarlet. Oh shit!â
âCanât what?â
âAnd you know why I havenât told them about her? I didnât because I was afraidâI was afraid theyâd try to talk me out of it.â
âOut of what?â
âAsking Scarlet to marry me, Rach,â Ian said, falling onto the bed. âI canât ask her to marry me.â
âYou canât?â (Hiding my excitement here was quite difficult. But considering the distraught look on Ianâs face, with him laid out on the bed like a man about to undergo open heart surgery, I couldnât break out the streamers and balloons just yet.)
âItâs just not right. Thereâs something thatâs not right!â
I stood in front of Ian on the bed with my arms crossed.
âWhatâs not right? This morning you called me all excited about the ring from Namibia. What happened?â
âDonât play with me, Rachel. You know sheâs not right for me. Maybe now isnât the time.â Ian shot up and stood beside me. âThereâs something missing. Something just missing from us.â
âSomething like what?â
A rap sounded at the door and one of Scarletâs happy friends poked her head into the room.
âWeâre almost ready for the surprise!â she whispered. âAbout to cut the cake, too!â
Ian was frozen.
âWeâll be out in a minute,â I said.
She closed the door slowly and reluctantly.
I looked back at Ian. Weâd been in these kinds of standoffs together in the past: sophomore year when he caught his girlfriend cheating on him with some muscly Omega in a bar in Tallahassee and I had to stop him from going off and losing his first fight; senior year when I was cheating on my boyfriend with a muscly Omega in a motel room in Tallahassee and called Ian from the bathroom for help when my boyfriend knocked on the door (ten minutes later, Ian pulled up in back of the motel and I climbed out the bathroom window).
âWhat are you going to do?â I asked.
âI canât do it, Rachel.â Ian looked into my eyes.
âIâll get you out of here if you want me to. Weâll walk right out the door. But I need you to be clear about what youâre doing,â I said. âThat girl in thereâall those people in there are expecting you to get down on one knee and propose.â
âI know.â
We looked to the balcony outside the glass doors beside the bed.
âItâs the tenth floor,â he said mordantly and we laughed.
âAnd weâre a little too old to be escaping from hotel rooms.â Ian walked to the doors and looked outside.
âI canât do this to Scarlet,â he said. âI know you hate her, but itâll really hurt her. Sheâs worth more to me than that.â
âI donât hateââ
âSheâll be devastated. I donât want to be that guy in her past. The one whoâmade her jaded like most of the other women I know.â
And
