that despite the scents of the patrol and the dead fox, he could smell a far subtler and sweeter smellâmilk. It was right here beneath the sycamore. âThe fox came past this tree,â he told the others. âI can smell her milk-scent.â
âWeâve found her trail!â Hollykit mewed.
Lionkit scrabbled out from under the root. âLetâs follow it!Itâll lead us to her cubs!â
Jaykit turned away from where Thornclaw, Spiderleg, Poppypaw, and Mousepaw were plunging through the frost-blackened undergrowth. Heading out from the sycamore roots, he padded along the scent of the milk-trail.
âWatch out!â Lionkit warned. âThere are brambles ahead.â
His senses trained only on the milk-scent, Jaykit had not noticed the spiky bush.
âIâll find a way through!â Hollykit offered. She pushed into the lead and wriggled into the branches.
âBut the trail leads around it,â Jaykit objected.
âWe canât afford to stay in the open,â Lionkit told him. âWe can pick up the scent on the other side, once there are brambles between us and Thornclawâs patrol.â
Reluctantly Jaykit followed Lionkit as their sister found a narrow tunnel through the tangle of branches. He was relieved when he picked up the foxâs scent quickly on the other side.
The trees were more widely spaced here. Jaykit could feel the wind in his fur, and sunlight reached down to the forest floor, mottling his pelt with warmth. The foxâs milky scent grew stronger and as they neared a clump of bracken that shielded a small lump in the ground, Jaykit scented a new smell. The cubs?
âWait here!â Hollykit ordered.
âWhy?â Lionkit objected.
âJust wait while I take a look behind this bracken!â
âIâm coming too,â Lionkit insisted.
âWe donât want the cubs to know weâre here,â Hollykit mewed. âIf all three of us go blundering in, theyâll know somethingâs up and weâll lose the element of surprise.â
âMy golden pelt will blend in better against the bracken than your black fur,â Lionkit pointed out.
âWhat about me?â Jaykit mewed.
âWe wonât attack the den without you,â Hollykit promised. âBut first, you and I will wait here while Lionkit finds the way in.â
Jaykit felt a twinge of frustration, but he knew Hollykitâs plan was sensible. âCome back as soon as you find it,â he called in a whisper as Lionkit disappeared into the bracken. For the first time he wondered if taking on the fox cubs was a wise idea. But how else was he going to persuade the Clan that there was no need to treat him like a helpless kit?
He strained his ears for the sound of Lionkit returning. It seemed an age before his brother finally pushed his way out of the bracken.
âThe main entrance to the den is right behind this clump,â Lionkit whispered, shaking leaves from his pelt. âBut thereâs a smaller entrance on the other side of the lump of earthâprobably an escape routeâthat leads into the back.â
âAre the cubs inside?â Jaykit asked.
âI didnât go in, but I could hear them crying for food.â
âThey must still be young, then,â Hollykit guessed. âOtherwise theyâd have come out by now.â
âItâll be easier to flush them out if we go down the escape passage,â Lionkit proposed. âIf we rush them, the surprisewill be enough to get them out of the den, and then we can chase them toward the border.â
âWhich way is the border?â Hollykit asked.
Lionkit snorted impatiently. âThereâll be a border whichever way we drive them!â he snapped. âThunderClan territory doesnât go on forever. Letâs get on with it, before Thornclaw finds them and takes all the glory.â
He surged away into the bracken before either Jaykit or
