    Sallygrabbedherhand.“Idon’twantyouwalkinghomealone.Letmecomewithyou.”
    “It’s only a couple of blocks. I’ll be fine.” Dawn smiled, trying to chase the worry from Sally’s face.“Listen,getbackoutthereandhavesomefunforme.Whenwemeetuptomorrow,Iwanttohear torridtalesofwhatyoudidtoapoor,unsuspectingcowboytonight.”
    Sallywastipsyenoughtolaugh,butnotsodrunkshedidn’tblushatthethought.“Youknow,it neveroccurredtomebefore,butcowboysarehot,aren’tthey?Idon’tknowwhatitisaboutthem.”
    Rough.Strong.Manly .DawnthoughtofhalfadozenmorereasonsSallymightbesuddenlyhorny foracowboy,butshekeptthemtoherself.“Meneither.”
    Shesaidhergood-byesthenandmadeherwayouttothestreet,carefultohugthewallassheleft thebar,desperateforthegirlsnottoseeherleave.Dawnsuckedinalungfulofthesweetnightairthat wassocleancomparedtothecitysmogshewasusedtobreathingonadailybasis.Shethoughtabout the city she called home as she headed down the Western-style street that lead back to the complex.
    New York was a fabulous place to live and work, but the pace of life was frantic. Dawn checked her watch.Itwasjustafterten,andshemarveledathowsafeshefelthere.Shewouldn’thavewalkedalone ifshewashome,atleastnotwithoutherhandinherpurse,clutchinghercanofmace.Herjobdidn’t payenoughforhertoliveinagoodneighborhood,andalthoughNewYorkwasn’tasbadasthemovies wouldhaveyoubelieve,itpaidtobecareful.
    Dawn looked up at the night sky, rendered almost speechless again but the beauty of the stars.
    Living in the city had its plus points, but she’d forgotten how much light pollution there was. She couldn’tremembereverseeingsomanystars.
    Thesoundsofpeoplehavingfunfilteredoutthroughthewindowsanddoorsofthewood-panelled restaurants, bars, and cafes she passed as she made her way through wide streets lit by the soft glow createdbytheimitationgaslights.Shenoticedanold,blueflatbedtruckoutofthecornerofhereyeas itslowedtoacrawlbesideherand,suddenly,shedidn’tfeelsosafeanymore.Dawndroppedhergaze andfixeditonthestreetaheadasshequickenedherpace.
    “Dawn?”
    Afamiliarmalevoicecomingfromthecabofthetruckmadeherturnaround,andshesaggedwith reliefwhenshesawBen’sfriendlyfacesmilingdownather.Hestoppedthetruckandclimbedout,and sheonlyrealizedhewasn’talonewhensheheardthepassengerdoorslamshutasGarrettgotoutofthe otherside.
    “Whatareyoudoingoutaloneatthistimeofnight?”Garrett’stonepissedheroffinstantly.She’d spent the last couple of days wondering about how things would be between them the next time they met,andthelastthingshe’dexpectedwasforhimtoseemsohostile.
    “Walkinghome.”Theurgetodefendherselfincreasedwhentheguysexchangedalookthattold hertheyboththoughtshewascrazy.“I’moldenoughnottotakestupidrisks.Thisplaceisalotsafer thanwhereIlive.”
    “Why, because it’s a holiday resort? We get the same mix of good and bad here as you’d find anywhereelse.”
