suspended.â
âThatâs it?â Cody blurted. âThe guy tries torape Liberty and all that happens is he gets suspended? What kind of justice is that?â
âIf heâs guilty, heâll probably go to jail,â Mom pointed out. âAt the very least heâll lose his job, and maybe even his license to teach.â
âThatâs
if
heâs guilty,â Dad said with emphasis.
âWhat do you mean âifâ?â Cody exploded. âThereâs no
if
about it! Liberty said he tried to rape her. Donât you think she would know?â
Dad put up his hand. âCalm down. I donât like men who force themselves on women any better than you do. All Iâm saying is itâs dangerous to jump to conclusions. Since I didnât witness what happened â and neither did you â Iâm not willing to crucify Dave Henderson just yet. Iâm sure there will be a complete police investigation.â
âItâs already underway,â Mom said. âThere were officers at the school all afternoon, interviewing people and checking out the band room. I imagine they were at the Hayesâ house too.â She looked at me and then Cody. âHas either of you spoken to Liberty this afternoon?â
âI tried,â I said. âI phoned after school, but her mother said she was sleeping.â
Mom nodded. âOf course. Poor thing. Afterall thatâs happened, she must be completely wrung out. We shouldnât bother her. Itâs just that your father got me thinking.â
âAbout what?â Dad said.
âAbout witnesses. I was wondering if thereâd been any.â
After supper I called Ryan. I wanted to find out why heâd missed history. I also wanted to see if he knew anything more than I did about what had happened to Liberty. After all, heâd been standing outside the office when I got there. Maybe heâd seen Liberty arrive. Maybe heâd even talked to her.
âI just couldnât stay awake,â he explained.
âNo kidding,â I replied. âI watched you go to math. You could barely walk.â
âYeah, well, then you wonât be surprised to find out that I never made it to math. I passed an empty classroom on the way and couldnât resist going in. I figured if I could put my head down for forty minutes Iâd be okay.â
âObviously the forty minutes stretched out a bit.â
âYou could say that. By the time I woke up, history class had already started.â
âThatâs like two periods!â I exclaimed. âI canât believe nobody found you.â
âJust lucky, I guess.â
âOr unlucky â if you consider that you missed the test. What are you going to tell Mrs. Adams?â
Ryan sighed. âI was kind of hoping the truth would work.â
I chuckled. âYou never know. By the way, howâs Hercules?â
âLots better.â
âThatâs good.â
âYeah. Doc Jensen gave him some medicine. Hopefully weâll both be able to sleep tonight.â
âI saw you waiting for your dad outside the office. I waved, but I guess you didnât see me.â
âSorry.â
âThatâs okay. I was just wondering if youâd been there when Liberty showed up. You heard about what happened between her and Mr. Henderson, right?â
Ryan didnât say anything.
âRyan? Are you still there?â
He sighed. âYup. Iâm here.â
âWere you there when Liberty went to the office?â
âNope.â
âYou do know what Mr. Henderson tried to do though, donât you?â
Another pause. Another sigh. And then in a brittle voice Ryan said, âI know what Liberty
says
he tried to do.â
Chapter Seven
I was kind of mad at Ryan. Though he hadnât come straight out with it, heâd pretty much called Liberty a liar. And that was so not like him. Ryanâs the
