out in the middle of Colorado Boulevard I could find someone, but it’s you who
should go,“ he responded dryly. „Louise says so.“
    „Now mat’s a tough argument.“
„I know. I’d put her on the phone to convince you but she’s out buying a new wardrobe of sundresses to
replace all the ski gear she bought last week.“
Selena laughed. „Let me think about it, John,“ she begged. „I’ll give you an answer this evening. Are
you just going to let the condo go to waste this year if I don’t take you up on the offer?“
    „Yup.“
    „Sad thought.“
„Not when we started picturing the beaches in Tahiti,“ he informed her promptly.
„I see your point. Thanks for thinking of me. I promise I’ll do my best to talk myself into it. Tell Louise I
    ’ll call her later tonight“
„We’ll be waiting,“ John told her cheerfully before hanging up the phone.
Two weeks at a ski resort in Utah. And she didn’t even ski! Still, it would be an experience, Selena
thought as she slowly replaced the instrument on her end. It was true that Alison and the others could
probably manage without her for that length of time. There hadn’t been much of an opportunity to take a
vacation during the past two years….
On the other hand, it might be a little lonely trapped amongst a bunch of ardent skiers without anyone to
share the joys of non-skiing with her. What would Richard say? Would he want to come with her?
She shied from die thought almost at once. If she were to invite Richard he would assume the obvious –
that she was inviting him to share a bed as well as a condominium. And who could blame him? But she
knew she wasn’t yet ready for that step in the relationship. She needed a little more time to decide how
deep her feelings went. The memory of her disastrous marriage still hovered at the edge of her thoughts
whenever she thought of a commitment to Richard. Why couldn’t she feel in his arms what she had sensed
awaited her in the embrace of York Sutherland last night?
Instantly she repressed that thought, rising to her feet with an annoyed restlessness. Smoothing the
narrow skirt of the blue-and-white striped suit she wore, Selena went determinedly back to work.
She still hadn’t made up her mind about whether or not to accept the Fletchers’ invitation as she let
herself into the sunny third-floor apartment she was renting in the lively South Lake Avenue area of
Pasadena. The proximity of the California Institute of Technology, the world-famous Huntington Library
and Art Gallery, and the beautiful homes of the nearby Oak Knoll area made for an eclectic, interesting
mix. All in all, Selena had often reflected, she had found a pleasant oasis in the sprawling, dynamic L.A.
    region.
It would mean buying a few warm clothes, she thought as she slipped into a slender, ankle-length, T-shirt
dress. The comfortable, figure-hugging knit material was a vivid maroon with a bright, wide hem of electric
pink. Selena slid her feet into a pair of sandals and went out into the kitchen to start her dinner.
The ringing of the doorbell came just as she was about to throw the handful of pasta into a kettle of
boiling water. It could have been worse, she decided, turning off the heat under the water and heading for
the door. Whoever it was could have caught her just after she’d gotten the pasta into the water!
„Who is it?“ she asked, glancing through the tiny peephole with the automatic cautiousness of a Los
    Angeles resident.
„York Sutherland,“ came the gravel-and-velvet reply.
Selena’s hand fell away from the doorknob as if the metal were molten. It took a startled heartbeat or
two to regain her equilibrium. Forcefully she reminded herself that her imagination had run away with her
last night. The man who stood outside her door was only a businessman, not a genuine jungle cat.
„What do you want?“ she demanded, not opening the door.
„I have to talk to you, Selena.“
    „In the
