championship-winning pyramid,â the coach told them. âBut it would take a lot of workâespecially on your part, Lacey.â
âIâll do whatever it takes,â Lacey said.
âThe state competition is only a week away,â the coach reminded everyone.
âThen we should start practicing now,â Lacey said, grabbing her pom-poms.
As Lacey and the other cheerleaders raced back into the gym to begin practicing, Emma W. turned to Katie. âYou really saved the day for my sister,â she said. âThanks.â
Katie smiled. âIt wasnât a big deal.â
Emma W. said, âYou have no idea what Lacey can be like when sheâs upset. It was a huge deal.â To prove it, Emma W. raised her arms high in the air. âK-A-T-I-E! Katie is the friend for me!â
Chapter 10
âHey, do you guys want to play football?â Kevin asked Katie at recess on Monday.
Katie shook her head. âI already promised Mandy and the Emmas that I would jump rope.â
âMaybe theyâll want to play football instead?â Kevin asked her.
âI donât think so,â Katie said. âWhy donât you get Jeremy or Manny?â
âNone of the guys from class 4B are here,â Kevin said. âTheyâre all in the library.â
âThe library?â Katie asked. âAt recess?â That didnât make any sense at all.
Kevin nodded. âItâs the only place they can get away from the pom-pom squad,â he explained. âThereâs no cheering allowed in the library. So Suzanne and the rest of the girls are pestering other kids. Just look.â
Kevin was right. The 4B squad was cheering for the third-graders who were playing hopscotch.
âThrow that key. Hop to three. Reach the ten. Come back again!â
They also cheered on the second-graders who were playing tag.
âRun, run, run. Donât get hit. Because if youâre tagged, you are it.â
Katie sighed. âThe 4B pom-pom squad is splitting up our whole grade.â
âItâs different for high school cheerleaders,â Emma W. said. âTheyâre cheering for their whole school, not just one grade or one class, the way the pom-pom squad is ...â
Suddenly, Katie got one of her great ideas. A huge smile flashed across her face. âEmma W., youâre a genius!â she exclaimed.
âThanks,â Emma W. answered happily. Then she paused. âWhy am I a genius?â she asked.
âYouâll see,â Katie said. âI think I know how to make everyone friends again. I just have to get Mr. G.âs permission. Will you guys come with me to talk to him after recess?â
Mandy and the two Emmas all nodded.
âMr. G., we think this school needs some spirit,â Katie told her teacher a little while later as the kids in her class came back from recess.
â School spirit,â Emma W. added. âNot just class spirit.â
Mr. G. nodded. âThere has been a lot of cheering in class 4B lately.â
âAnd nowhere else,â Katie said. âThatâs the problem. We all go to one school. Shouldnât we be cheering about that?â
âIt makes perfect sense to me,â Mr. G. said.
âThatâs why we thought the fourth grade could host a pep rally for the whole school,â Katie explained. âEvery grade would be there. We could do it in the gym. Thatâs big enough to hold everyone.â
âWe could have pom-poms, and maybe write a school cheer,â Mandy said.
âOne that everyone could learn,â Katie added.
âI think that sounds like a great idea,â Mr. G. said. âIâll talk to Principal Kane about it.â
As Katie and her friends took their seats, Emma W. whispered to Katie, âDo you think Principal Kane will say yes to a pep rally?â
Katie held up her right hand and crossed her fingers tight.
