marriage would be no different. He would be in charge. The first step was to maintain his self-control.
"This has gone far enough," Owen said coolly. "For the last time, Angie, I didn’t marry you because of the merger."
"Why did you marry me?" she asked. She did not turn to look at him. She was still hugging herself very tightly.
"Because I want you as my wife."
"Owen, do you love me? Really love me?" Angie asked in a small voice, still not turning. "You’ve never said the words, you know. I’ve been assuming so much. I’ve been telling myself that you have a hard time talking about your emotions, but maybe I’ve been making excuses for you because I was so desperately in love myself."
The brandy glass made a sound like the crack of a pistol shot when Owen slammed it on the liquor cabinet. He stalked across the room and caught Angie by the shoulders, whirling her to face him. He saw her beautiful eyes widen in surprise and trepidation.
"You don’t need to make excuses for me," he bit out. "I married you. You are the only woman I have ever asked to marry me. You are everything I want and need in a wife, and I knew it the minute I saw you. We are in this together, you and I. We will make it work. You have my word of honor on it."
"If only I could be sure–"
He looked into her tumultuous gaze, gave a low, frustrated groan and pulled her into his arms. He covered her trembling mouth with his before she could finish the sentence.
Deliberately Owen set about using his own desire to ignite Angle’s. He was positive he could do it. She had been responding to him beautifully during the past few weeks–sweet and hot, hovering on the brink of total surrender. Owen had gloried in the knowledge that he could make her react completely to him.
He had used his sensual power gently, cautiously, not wanting to alarm her or take advantage of her.
    But he was getting desperate.
And she was his wife. He had a right to coax the response he knew she was longing to give him. If he could get her into bed, everything would be all right again, he was certain of it.
    "Owen . Owen, please…"
He heard the feminine desire in her soft, pleading cry and felt her begin to lean into him. Her soft breasts were crushed against his chest. Her arms stole around his neck and her lips parted as he deepened the kiss.
Owen let his tongue probe the warmth of Angie’s mouth as he slid his hands slowly up her spine. She sighed softly and her eyes closed. Owen felt her hips against his thighs, and his already aroused body tightened even more with a fierce, compelling need.
Owen was suddenly swamped with desire. He wanted to pull Angie onto the bed, strip off the silver silk and plunge himself into her. He inhaled the scent of her, part perfume and part feminine arousal, and he knew she was already becoming moist, welcoming, responsive….
He could not wait any longer. She was clinging to him. Owen scooped Angie up in his arms and started toward the huge, white, canopied bed. He could only think of one thing, and that was his overpowering need to make Angie his wife in every way. This was his wedding night, and he was on fire for his bride.
In the morning she would understand that his need for her had nothing to do with the merger of
Sutherland and Townsend. He would convince her here in their wedding bed. With my body, I thee worship.
    "Owen…"
"Hush, sweetheart. We’ll talk in the morning. It’s all right. Trust me, Angie. Everything’s going to be just fine. This is the way it’s supposed to be between us."
He put her on the bed and leaned over to slide the tiny straps of the gown over her shoulders. Angie did not move as he slowly eased the fluid fabric to her waist to reveal her breasts. Owen sucked in his breath at the sight of her rosy nipples.
He gently caught one hard little berry between his fingers and squeezed carefully. Angie gasped, and Owen felt the shiver that went through her as if it had gone through himself.
