kill him if you dump him out of the blue.â
âDonât worry, Iâm not planning to dump Cam at all.â I smiled slowly as a great idea popped into my head. Who says scientists canât be creative? âNo, Iâve just realized thereâs a much kinder, gentler way to handle this. Iâm going to get
Cam
to break up with
me
!â
âHuh?â Allie looked perplexed. âWhat are you talking about, Lexi?â
âYeah.â Nick set down his threaded cranberries and peered at me suspiciously. âSince when do you play those kinds of games? Youâve always been a straight shooter.â
I raised an eyebrow at him. âActually, you were the inspiration for this plan.â
âMe?â Nick blinked. âYouâre pinning this on
me
?â
âYeah. Just look at youâRachel dumped you almost a month ago, and youâre still a mess. And you guys were together less than a year.â I shook my head. âNo way do I want to do that to Cam. Itâll be way easier on him if I let him make the decision to end things.â
âI hope youâre not in a hurry,â Allie said dubiously.
âIâm not,â I replied, tossing a piece of popcorn into my mouth. âI wonât rush it. These things take time.â
âNo.â Allie shook her head. âI mean, I hope you arenât counting on Cam suddenly deciding to dump you anytime this century. Because itâs not going to happen.â
âSheâs right, Lex.â Nick stretched out his legs and flicked a stray cranberry off the knee of his jeans. âThe dude has it bad for you. He never even
looks
at other girls. Not even superhot, half-naked ones.â He licked his lips. âMmm, half-naked girls,â he Homer Simpsoned.
I rolled my eyes. Maybe there was aglimmer of light at the end of Nickâs tunnel of heartbreak after all.
âAnyway,â he went on, âif youâre really set on ending things, you should just go ahead and do it. Cam is going to be totally devastated either way.â
âNot if I do this right,â I countered, the plan forming more fully in my mind even as I spoke. âAll I have to do is set things up so he falls for another girl. That way, heâll realize for himself that weâve been growing apart and then
heâll
break up with
me
.â I shrugged. âHeâs too honest to do anything else once heâs seen the light. And that way, no oneâs heart gets broken. If I handle it right, we can totally stay friends and enjoy the rest of senior year together without all the complications and wondering where our relationship is going and stuff. Itâs winwin. Totally foolproof!â
âYouâre nuts, Lexi,â Allie said. âIâm telling you, itâll never work. Cam adores you.â
âAnd I adore him.â I sighed as they both stared at me with skepticism written all over their faces. Just because I was able to look at the situation logically, it didnât mean I didnât have feelings or that this wasnât tearing me up inside. âListen, you guys, I wish I didnât have to do this. But Iâve been over all the options, and itâs the only way. Cam and I are just too different. Thatâs okay in high school, but we wonât be in high school much longer. That means itâs time for some tough choices. Like it or not.â
Nick rolled his eyes. âOh, please,â he said, reaching for the popcorn bowl. âIf you keep this up, youâll have to quit the Science Geekettes of America and join the drama club.â
I reached over and gave him a shove. âIâm serious, smart guy,â I said. âIf you can think of a better idea to handle this, then spill it.â
âI can think of a better idea,â Allie put in. âStay with Cam. Figure things out. Live happily ever after.â
That was Allie for you. Hopeless romantic.
