nodded. âThe three of us. Weâll have a nice dinner.â She walked him to his SUV. It took him four tries to start it up.
âDad, youâve really got to get this car serviced,â Destiny said.
He smiled at her. âItâs on my list.â
âDad, you know you donât have a list.â
âItâs on my list to make a list.â Tires squealing, he pulled away.
Destiny felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned and Ari kissed her. âHey, weâre graduates. Iâm totally psyched. Do you believe it? No more gym class. No more Coach Green telling me what a loser I am.â
Ana-Li laughed. âJust because you have a diploma doesnât mean youâre not a loser.â
Ari pretended to be hurt. âWhatâs up with that? Youâre dissing me on graduation day?â
Ana-Li opened her diploma and held it up. âCheck it out. They misspelled my name. Two nâs.â
âThatâs terrible,â Destiny said, studying the diploma. âHow could they do that?â
âIt means you didnât really graduate,â Ari told Ana-Li. âNo one will believe thatâs your diploma. Your whole life is going to be messed up now.â
Ana-Li shook her tiny fist at Ari. âIâm going to mess you up!â
Laughing, Ari raised both fists and began dancing from side to side. âYou want a piece of me? Huh? You want a piece of me?â
Ana-Li ignored him. She turned to Destiny. âHow you doing?â
âTough morning,â Destiny replied. âYou know.â
Ari lowered his fists. His smile faded.
âWhat are you two doing now?â Destiny asked. âWantto come back with me? We can sit around and reminisce or something.â
âIs lunch included in this invitation?â Ari asked.
Destiny nodded.
âCount me in.â
âJust let me say good-bye to my parents, and Iâll meet you at your house,â Ana-Li said. She trotted back toward the school.
Ari slid an arm over Destinyâs shoulders, and they walked the few blocks to her house. Cars filled with their friends rolled by, horns honking, music blaring from open windows.
âDid you hear about Fletchâs party last night?â Ari asked. âHis parents were in L.A. So Fletch had two kegs. Everyone got trashed. And his brotherâs garage band played all night.â
Destiny sighed. âIâm sorry. I know you wanted to go. But I just didnât feel like partying.â
They stepped onto her front stoop. Destiny fumbled in her bag for her key. She found it, turned the key in the lock, pushed open the front doorâand screamed.
âOH, NO!â
Ari grabbed her and they both stared in disbelief at the living room walls.
Fanged creatures with curled horns on their headsâ¦A winged, two-headed demon, both heads spewing black bloodâ¦A grinning devilâ¦
Ugly, black demons painted all over the walls.
chapter eight
âTHE MONSTER DID ITâ
âOH, NO! OH, NO!â DESTINY HELD ONTO ARI AND pressed her head against his shoulder. Staring at the crude, childish paintings, she led the way into the house.
âThis is too weird,â Ari muttered.
Destiny opened her mouth to speak. But a shrill cry interrupted herâand Mikey came leaping off the stairs onto Ariâs shoulders. He curled his hands around Ariâs throat and screamed, âIâm a MONSTER! Iâll kill you! Iâll KILL you!â
Ari dropped to the floor under the eight-year-old boyâs weight. He sprawled on his back and pried Mikeyâs fingers from around his neck. âWhoa. Easy, man. Mikey, youâre choking me.â
âIâm not Mikey. Iâm a monster !â
Destiny reached down to help pull Mikey off.
âHey, whatâs up?â Ana-Li burst into the room. She let out a cry when she saw the crude creatures smeared over walls. âOhmigod.â
Destiny pulled Mikey to his feet, then
