forward.â
âIâm not holding that against you,â he said. âWeâve all done things we wish we hadnât.â
She let her breath out slowly. âThank you for understanding.â
âOf course.â His expression turned to one of chagrin as he rubbed his neck. âI was a little out of control myself back then. Being a punk and rebelling against the world.â
âYou seem to have recovered nicely.â
His smile slanted to one side. âI like to think Iâve matured.â
âThat makes two of us whoâve matured. Weâre different people these days. So...if youâre willing, I say we forget the past. Agreed?â
âThe way we met might be hard to forget,â he teased. âBut I understand you have a reputation to uphold. I wonât breathe a word of it. Iâd never do that to you, anyway.â
She smoothed her tunic. âIâm grateful.â
âNo problem. Maybe we can just...start over.â
What did that mean? Start over how? âExcuse me?â she said.
He slid his hands in his pockets and leaned against the counter. âYouâre not with someone, are you? I donât see a ring...â
Once again, she felt the absence of the gold band that had resided on her wedding finger for so many years. âNo, not anymore.â
âThen will you let me take you to dinner sometime?â
The way his shoulders lifted slightly seemed endearingly boyish, as if he really didnât want her to say no. But she hadnât expected this and wasnât prepared for it. âThat would be impossible,â she said. âI appreciate the offer, though.â
When she rejected him so quickly and unequivocally, he looked a little deflated. âAre you that sure you wonât like me?â
She scowled. Sheâd been âoff the marketâ for so long. Even after Jack had moved out, sheâd been sequestered in her own home, workingâor trying to workâfor over a year. That left her feeling socially clumsy. She almost gave in just to avoid sounding like a bitch, but she wasnât ready to start dating, especially someone like Rafe. âIâm not going to be your next conquest,â she said.
He raised a hand. âWhoa! I said dinner .â
After checking the hall again, she decided her brother must be in the bathroom. âI heard you, but letâs be honest. No man wants to make an investment without some kind of return.â
When he realized she was serious, his playfulness evaporated. âI wasnât asking for a commitment to sleep with me, for Godâs sake. Dinnerâs...dinner. How else am I supposed to get to know you?â
Heâd lost that rangy, lone wolf aura that had made him seem so unpredictable and dangerous when he was a younger man. Itâd been replaced with a strong sense of purpose but, in some ways, that made him more of a threat. There werenât many men who had the confidence to go after a woman so directly, and that scared the hell out of her. âTrust me, we wouldnât be well-suited. Iâm doing you a favor.â
âI can look out for myself.â
âThereâs no need to waste any time or money. Like I said, Iâd be a bad investment.â
He hesitated for a second. Then he said, âAre you afraid I canât afford it? I donât come from money so Iâm not good enough for you?â
âStop it! No. Of course not.â
âBecause we never really got to know each other,â he said. âAnd, for the record, Iâm embarrassed about that night, too. If Iâm remembering correctly, it wasnât my best performance.â
Sex with Rafe had lasted all of about thirty seconds. Thereâd been a brief flash of pain as heâd pushed inside her, some frantic movement while sheâd stared at the water stain on the ceiling and a moan as heâd climaxed. Then heâd rolled off her and
