earshot before saying anything. “Aren't they cute, having a little play date. Okay, on to more important things. If I just heard right, Phebs is back on the market. So, who can we fix her up with?”
The rest of our free time was spent on going over the guys names in Jaycee’s mental Little Black Book.
Mrs. Bumgarner didn’t waste anytime starting class as soon as the bell rung. “We are going to change things up a bit. I have everyone’s name in this bucket and I am going to draw two names at a time. Whoever your name is drawn with will be your partner. You will be given a list of Edgar Allan Poe’s work. You will chose a story or a poem, and write a report on it. I want you to dissect it and find the underlying meaning and your interpretations.”
She handed paper to everyone on the front row. “Please take one and pass the rest back. On the front side is instructions, and the list for you to choose from is on the back. Now for the fun part.” She pulled a name out of the bucket. “Max you will be paired up with…” she pulled out the second name, “Chris.”
I totally zoned out until I heard her call out Daniel’s name. I crossed my fingers, hoping she would draw my name with his.
“Daniel you will be paired up with Jonathan.”
Jonathan! That was the guys name that Daniel switched seats with. I will have to try to remember that.
Mrs. Bumgarner pulled out another name. “Megan you will be paired up with….Hannah.”
Wait, what? That’s not even fair! I saw Megan do a side glance my way, so I tried to keep any and all expressions hid.
“Ouch! Sucks to be you.” My wonderful best friend pointed out.
“I’m telling you Han, I can do this. I have been doing tons of reading about magic and casting spells. I know that we can communicate with my grandma.” Jaycee cornered me in the bathroom before lunch. It had been the only time today that we had a chance to talk alone.
Yes, we needed information on Jaycee’s heritage and it would be helpful to talk to Jaycee’s grandmother. It’s the fact that she has been dead for seven years, and that she moved on and didn’t hang around, that kinda puts a damper on doing so. It had actually been Daniel who came up with the idea originally so, of course, he’s all for it. It’s only me with the nagging feeling that this could be a bad thing. Ya just don’t go calling on a spirit because you don’t know who might answer. I was to the point of telling Jaycee that I wanted no part of it. The only thing is, if I tell her that, she will go and do it by herself.
I thought I would try to compromise with Jaycee. “How about this, we will go talk with your Aunt Lucy and if that doesn’t work THEN we can talk about calling on your grandma?”
“Fine, but I’m holding you to it. Let’s go eat so I can flirt with my hot basketball player. I haven’t been able to spend much time with Mike lately. So, I‘m thinking that after we hit up the old folks home, I’m gonna have Mike come over to watch movies or something.”
She makes the transition between ‘supernatural fight for our lives girl’ and ‘superficial teenage girl’ seem effortless. It makes me extremely jealous. We left the bathroom and headed to the lunch room.
“First of all, it’s a rest home. Calling it a nursing home is also an acceptable term. Second, quality time with the boyfriend is a great idea. Speaking of which, Daniel’s birthday is Sunday. So I’m taking him out Saturday to spend the day with him. I have it all planned out but I want your opinion.”
“Sure, shoot.”
Before I had a chance to tell her, Phebs hollered at us from across the cafeteria. “Hey Han, heard about you being drafted in Mrs. Bumgarner’s class.”
I automatically
