âFuck you!â Lara shouted. âYouâre going to be all right,â Francis said. âFuck you!â Lara screamed. âTry to breathe,â Ed said. âRemember the breathing?â âFuck, fuck, fuck,â Lara screamed.
Something was wrong. Something was terribly wrong. She knew it. And here she was, surrounded by these idiot men (âIdiots!â she shouted) who thought she was hysterical.
âIâm dying!â she screamed.
âYouâre not dying,â Ed said.
It felt like she was being scraped raw inside by talons. It felt like her guts were being carved out. Or like teeth! It felt like small sharp teeth were chewing her up inside.
âDo something!â she shouted.
âWell, we really canât do much,â Brian said.
âWhat?â Ed and Lara said.
âI could take a look,â Brian said.
âBut weâre not supposed to transport women in labor,â Francis said. âWeâre supposed to stay here. Unless thereâs a problem.â
âThereâs a fucking problem!â Lara shouted.
âDo you mind if I look?â Brian said as he slipped his hands around the waistband of Laraâs pants. Ed found the image disturbing, and turned away. Lara saw him turn away. She managed, through her pain, to form the words again: âFuck you.â Brian sat up. âHold your legs together,â he said. âWhat?â Lara said. âIs it coming?â Ed said. âOf course itâsââ Lara interrupted herself to scream. âClose your legs!â Brian shouted. âAre we taking her?â Francis said. âYes. Yes. Oh God, yes,â Brian said. âClose your legs!â he yelled at Lara. âOh, God; oh Jesus,â Brian said. Lara screamed. Ed leaned down and held her hand. âPlease,â he said, âclose your legs.â âI want it out!â Lara shouted. âPlease,â Ed said, âdo what they say.â âExcuse me,â Francis said, and shoved Ed away.
Brian and Francis set the stretcher on the floor beside the couch. âIâm dying!â Lara screamed. Brian and Ed lifted her to the stretcher. âClose your legs,â Brian said. Lara closed her legs. âDonât drop her,â Ed said as he opened the door. âCan I come with you?â âTwo steps,â Francis said to Brian, who was backing out. Ed shut the door. He looked at Sylviaâs dark house. Death could come to anyone, anywhere , he thought. âAre you coming?â Francis said. Ed jumped into the ambulance. The siren screamed, but it was nothing compared to Laraâs screams. âLet me see where youâre at,â Francis said. He spread a sheet over Laraâs lap and bent under to have a look. When his head came out of the sheet, his eyes were wide, his skin white. âOh, Jesus,â Francis said. âHold your legs together.â
Lara tried to hold her legs together, but it felt like she was being sliced by knives. âEd,â she shouted. âEd?â
âIâm here, baby, Iâm right here.â He squeezed her hand.
She screamed. She screamed the whole ride from Voorhisville to the hospital in Becksworth. When they got there, the doctor was waiting for them.
âHow about an epidural?â she said. âYou better take a look,â Brian said. She lifted the sheet and looked. âTake her to the OR,â the doctor said. âWhatâs happening?â Ed said. âYou stay here,â a nurse said. âWhatâs happening?â Ed said to Brian and Francis. They both stared at him, then Francis said, âThere might be some complications.â Ed sat down. Brian and Francis left. The hospital was so quiet Ed thought he could still hear Laraâs screams. But it couldnât have been her, because Lara had gone to the right, and the screams were coming from the left.
