she found something. The destruction of her home and livelihood couldnât have been the only underhanded deal heâd negotiated in all his years in business. She knew what Adam had done probably wasnât illegal per se, but it was sneaky and unfair and mean-spirited. And she would find something eventually, some kind of evidence that would expose him as the sleazy businessman she knew he was. Only then would she fulfill the promise sheâd made at her grandmotherâs deathbed, finally put her memories to rest and go on with her life.
By the end of the day, Trish was no closer to finding anything she might use against Adam Duke than she had been that morning. She turned off her computerand grabbed her purse, then knocked on Adamâs office door. When he called out, she poked her head inside. âIf thereâs nothing else you need, Iâll be leaving for the day.â
âDammit,â he muttered.
With some alarm, she checked her watch. It was almost six oâclock. âMy usual hours are nine to five-thirty but Iâll be glad to stay later if you need me.â
âWhat?â Adam looked up and frowned as if just noticing her. âOh. Sorry. Youâre leaving? Thatâs fine. Have a good evening.â
âWhatâs wrong?â
He paged through the file, his mouth set in a grim line. âSomethingâs missing from this file.â
Trishâs eyes widened. âIâI put everything on your desk.â
âIâm sure you did.â He thumbed through both stacks of papers clipped into the file. âBut thereâs a lease amendment missing. Itâs got to be somewhere in the files, or maybe itâs around Cherylâsâerâyour desk.â
âIâll check.â In a panic, she rushed back to her area and rifled through the desk drawers. Had she subconsciously sabotaged a file? Of course she hadnât. She stopped and took a deep breath. Tried to relax. Then she carefully checked the file drawer, nearest to the place sheâd first found the Mansfield documents.
âI think I found it,â she said, walking back into Adamâs office.
He jumped up from his desk and met her halfway. âWhere was it?â he demanded.
âIt was tucked inside the Manning file.â
He rolled his eyes. âManning. Great. I suppose thatâs close to Mansfield.â
âNext file over.â
âGood to know.â He walked back to his desk where papers were scattered everywhere. âThanks for finding this. It wouldâve been disastrous if the client found out weâd lost it.â
âIâm glad I could help.â
âI just wonder how many more mistakes like this one are waiting to be found.â
âI can start checking through the files tomorrow if youâd like.â
âGood idea.â He rubbed his knuckles across his jaw. âI guess Cheryl was under more pressure than she let on. This never wouldâve happened if she was on top of her game.â
âThree monthsâ pregnant and trying to plan a wedding?â Trish said. âIâd call that pressure.â
Adam chuckled ruefully. âYeah, yeah. I guess I didnât help much. Still, this couldâve been a costly mistake. Iâd appreciate it if youâd start going through the files more closely tomorrow.â
âOf course.â Trish almost laughed out loud at the request. She now had a legitimate reason to pore through the files and heâd handed it to her on a silver platter. She almost felt guilty, but refused to let herself go there. âDo you need anything else tonight?â
âNo, thanks,â Adam said as he sat back down at his desk. âYou go and enjoy your evening.â
She watched as he rolled his sleeves up his muscular arms. Heâd long ago removed his jacket and his tie was off now. His usually well-groomed thick, dark hair was unruly and looked as if heâd
