wiped a tear of mirth. “I hit the jackpot.”
Carson didn’t answer, but he secretly thought it was the other way around. Somehow, he’d been granted a chance at happiness, and he wouldn’t squander it, no matter what happened.

Chapter Three
The next day

Brody watched Carson as his lamb experimentally sniffed one of the incense candles. His mate let out a moan of contentment. “Mmm, this smells great.” He turned pleading eyes to Brody. “Can we get this one, too?”
Brody stole a look at the price and suppressed a wince. For a scented candle, the thing was awfully expensive. But how could he resist those wide blue eyes? And more importantly, he wanted to provide for whatever Carson wanted and needed. Something inside him told him to. His wolf yearned to care for Carson, to give the lamb everything he’d missed in life. It was astonishing that his mate had only just discovered incense candles. Then again, in Ramston, life would have been focused on caring for the younger lambs and preventing the wolf attacks. Brody couldn’t help but feel a little guilty about that, even if he knew it was the way things worked in their world.
He didn’t realize he’d been ignoring Carson until slender arms wrapped around his torso. “It’s all right,” his lamb whispered in Brody’s mind. “We’re beyond that now.”
Brody smiled and caressed Carson’s soft hair. It was one of the advantages and disadvantages of having a mate. They could hear each other’s thoughts and talk through their telepathic bond. Brody loved it, but he also would have liked to keep some of his concerns to himself, not to burden Carson with his worries.

“Hey, we’re a team now,” Carson said. “Your troubles are mine. I can handle it.”
“I know you can, and I trust you. I just want to protect you.” He shook himself and struggled to break the suddenly somber mood.
They were better off relaxing and just enjoying each other’s presence.
“We can get the incense candle if you like. Anything you want, Carson.”
Carson hugged him again and selected one of the candles—just one, and the cheapest, Brody noted. Carson must have overheard Brody’s financial concerns as well. Berating himself for his stupidity, Brody chose a second item, the last one that Carson had wanted.
“Brody, you don’t have to…” Carson tried to say.
Brody shushed him with a kiss. “I want to.” The scented candles weren’t a useless commodity. The smells of the town still bothered Carson, even inside the hotel room. Sheep shape-shifters had very sensitive noses and even detected delivery boys with various products. The hotel policy had nothing against the use of scented candles. It helped that Brody gave the manager a generous tip to keep their stay there as discreet as possible.
Carson sighed but yielded. It was just a candle, and a few dollars wouldn’t hurt their budget too much, and they’d stopped at this store to buy stuff, not to window-shop. After Brody talked to Soren, he’d be able to access the other accounts. Brody and Carson would be fine.
All day, Brody had led Carson around the city, taking him to parks, showing him the sights. Brody had never truly enjoyed the beauty that could appear even in a huge metropolis such as Los Angeles, but with Carson by his side, everything seemed so much better. But of course, once they’d grown tired of touring, they’d begun to shop—and Brody could not resist bringing Carson to this store.
Eagerly, Brody led his mate from the more neutral part of the store and advanced into the kinkier one. He’d taken his mate here without telling Carson what it actually was, an adult shop. The entire 32

Here, however, there was lubricant of all variety, dildos in different colors and
