able to make arrangements as soon as we finish our examination.â
âOkay.â Now he pressed the heels of his hands to his eyes, leaning forward to brace his elbows on his thighs. âOkay.â
âWho was your uncle sexually involved with?â
âHuh.â Benâs eyes, already rimmed with red, lifted to Eveâs face. âWell, Jesus, Ava. I mean they were married for Christâs sake.â
âOutside of marriage.â
âNobody.â Anger and insult snapped through the grief, brought color back to Benâs face. âThatâs a hell of a thing to say. He didnât cheat. He wasnât a cheater. You donât know the kind of man he was. He believed in honesty, in good sportsmanship, in playing to win, but playing it straight.â
âWho stands to gain from his death?â
âNobody,â Ben replied. âHis death diminishes all of us. You mean financially. I would, Ava would.â He let out a long breath. âI donât know how things were set up. There are probably charitable organizations, thereâd be something for Gretaâthe house manager. But what youâre talking about, that would be me and Ava. I need to get over there.â
Even as he rose, the âlink Leopold still held signaled. After a glance at the display, Leopold offered it. âItâs Mrs. Anders.â
Ben grabbed the âlink, turned his back. âPrivacy mode,â he ordered. âAva. God, Ava, I just heardâ¦I know. I know. Itâs all right. Yes, the police are here. Yes, thatâs right. Iâm coming right over. Iââ His voice cracked, then firmed again. âI canât believe heâs gone. I canât take it in. Iâll be there as soon as I can.â
After ending the transmission, Ben turned back to Eve. His expression was simply shattered. âShe needs family. I have to go now.â
âWeâll need to see Mr. Andersâs office,â Eve told him. âAnd weâll need to access his electronics.â
âAll right. Yes, all right. I have to go. Leo, whatever they need.â
E ve waited until they were heading down. âFunny, isnât it, how Andersâs officeâlike his nephewâsâis all casual guy, even a little toward man cave with the trophies and the sports equipment everywhere. Nothing polished, fashionable, or edgy. Nothing like where he lives.â
âWell, he sells the sports stuff. And lots of houses more reflect the womanâs taste than the guyâs. Or one partnerâs taste over the otherâs.â
She thought of herself and Roarke. When it came to decor, sheâ¦never gave it a thought, she admitted. Yet, she had her home office, her somewhat shabbyâby comparison with the restâhome office that fit what could be called her style.
âDidnât notice a man cave at the house,â she commented, and shrugged. âHowâd Forrest play for you, Peabody?â
âForrest wins actor of the century award, or he was sincerely shocked when you told him his uncle was dead, and was sincerely and deeply broken up. There just wasnât a false note. I believe him.â
âSeemed straight enough. Weâll verify his alibi. If Anders stood as daddy since Forrest was six, thatâs twenty-five years or so. Funny that Ava said they didnât have any children.â
âWell, they didnât.â
âShe didnât even mention him, and doesnât call to tell him for hours after the house manager notified her. Maybe a false note,â Eve speculated, âmaybe just shock and confusion. Forrest comes off as a nice guyâand a nice, well-off kind of guy. Now heâs a really rich kind of guy.â
âIâll start a run on him. You didnât mention really cute kind of guy,â Peabody added as they rode down to the underground garage. âHe had that easygoing, athletic thing happening.
