whispered.
âWho cares?â George whispered back. âWeâre in!â
They were halfway down the hall when Nancy spotted Kirby. The strands of his blond hair were sticking way up in the air.
âHi, Kirby,â Nancy said. âNew haircut?â
âGotta go!â Kirby blurted. He turned and slipped into one of the studios.
âBess? George?â Nancy asked. âDid you see Kirby? He looked like a porcupine!â
âForget Kirby,â said George. âLook at Chip!â
George pointed inside the makeup room. Chip was sitting in one of the chairs whileLucinda sprayed her with pink glitter.
âWhat are you doing to my dog?â Nancy demanded.
âCoco is going to be on the five oâclock news,â Lucinda explained. âTheyâre doing a segment on Halloween makeup thatâs safe for dogs.â
Another woman appeared at the door. In her arms was a little white dog with a ruby collar.
âWhat is that dog doing here?â she exclaimed, pointing to Chip. âCoco and I drove two hours just to be here today!â
Lucinda froze with the can in her hand. âCoco?â she exclaimed. She looked at Chocolate Chip. âThen whoâs this?â
âCocoâs understudy,â George said quickly.
Chip barked and jumped off the chair. She shot right past Nancy and out the door.
âChipâcome back!â Nancy cried.
People stopped to stare as Nancy, Bess, and George chased Chip down the hall.
âSheâs going crazy!â George said as they ran. âJust like that dog in the movie.â
âMaybe she saw a ghost!â Bess panted.
âNo way!â said Nancy. âThat woman must have scared her, thatâs all.â
Chip slid on the floor as she rounded the corner. The three girls ran around the corner too. They skidded to a stop when they saw a man with wild hair and a bright orange lab coat. The man laughed as he held Chocolate Chip.
âMwah, hah, hah,â he said. âCute puppy!â
Nancy gulped as she recognized the man at once.
âDr. Funk-n-Stine!â
Chapter Seven
Follow That Ghost!
The girls were too scared to scream. They were too frozen with fear to run.
âWoof!â Chip barked. She jumped out of Dr. Funk-n-Stineâs arms and ran straight to Nancy.
âG-g-good girl!â Nancy stammered.
She scooped Chip up and ran with her friends out of the TV station. Mrs. Marvinâs car was waiting for them.
âThat was him,â George said as they raced to the car. âThat was Dr. Funk-n-Stine!â
âHe said he would be back,â added Bess.
Nancy hugged her puppy tight. She didnât want to believe in ghosts. But seeing wasbelieving. And she was pretty sure she had just seen the ghost of Dr. Funk-n-Stine!
âTrick or treat, smell my feet!â Henderson sang as he ran through the school yard. âGive me something good to eat!â
Nancy watched as Hendersonâs red superhero cape flapped behind him. It was Halloween morning. Some of the kids at school were already dressed in their costumes.
âOkay, Clue Crew,â George said. âWhat do we tell Shelby when we see her?â
âItâs a no-brainer,â Bess answered. âWe tell her we saw a real liveâI mean, real deadâghost. Right, Nancy?â
âI guess.â Nancy sighed. Sheâd been up all night trying to come up with a reason for seeing Dr. Funk-n-Stine. But she couldnât think of one.
âWell, I declare,â Nadineâs voice said. âI do believe itâs the Clue Crew.â
Nadine fluttered a lacy fan before her faceas she walked over. She was wearing an old-fashioned dress with puffy sleeves. The dress was so long it skimmed the ground.
âPretty costume, Nadine,â Nancy said. âAre you going trick-or-treating tonight?â
âI should say not !â Nadine replied. She tossed her long curls dramatically.
