Maybe sheâs had some sort of breakdown.â
âWe should never have done that stupid Ouija board. Weâve scared her senseless!â said Jenny.
âIsnât it a little weird that Unaâs the one who freaked out?â said Rachel. âI mean, sheâs the one whoâs always up for this sort of stuff. In fact, she suggested it!â
âYeah,â Jenny agreed, âI wouldâve thought if any of us lost it, it would be Adie.â
Grace twisted around to lean toward the girls.
âWell, whatever the reason, Una is in trouble,â she said, âand we have to figure out what weâre going to do about it. I meanââ
âMind if I sit here?â
The sudden presence of James and his piercing blue eyes gave Grace such a fright she squealed and toppled backward off the chair. Giggling erupted all around her as she struggled to right herself, ignoring Jamesâs proffered arm.
âAre you all right?â Jenny asked.
âIâm sorry,â said James, who was now seated beside her. âI didnât mean to scare you. Are you okay?â
âIâm fine,â replied Grace, turning to face the whiteboard. She was in a daze. Mrs. Hennelly marched in without addressing the class and immediately began scrawling on the board. Feeling oddly detached from her surroundings, Grace took out her pen and copied down the notes. She didnât look at James until a few minutes into the lesson, when he nudged her arm and pushed his notebook toward her so she could read it.
JamesGrace 4EVER. A sudden sensation of pins and needles shot down Graceâs legs and up her spine, forcing her to her feet.
âAargh!â she exclaimed. More snickering laughter.
âI donât feel well, Miss!â said Grace. âI have to go to the bathroom.â The laughter spread throughout the class.
âQuiet, everyone!â ordered Mrs. Hennelly with immediate effect. âGo ahead, Grace. But tell the school secretary to call home for you. You shouldnât be here if youâre feeling sick.â
Grace didnât answer or pause to collect her things or look at her friends. She hurried out the door and headed for the nearest girlsâ bathroom, sinking down onto the cool tiled floor. She held her head in her hands and took long, slow breaths.
What on earth is going on?

It was lunchtime, and the four girls were deep in discussion.
âSo the love spell has worked,â Rachel said over her sandwich. âA little late, maybe, but itâs worked.â
âBut why ?â asked Grace. âWhy that one? Why now ?â
âI donât have a clue.â
âMaybe weâve got it,â said Adie.
âGot what?â said Grace.
âWhatever power or skill witches get. I mean, that spell worked, the Ouija board worked. Maybe weâreâ¦well, maybe weâre witches now. Maybe weâve just⦠got it .â
They all considered this for a moment.
âThen what about Una?â said Jenny. âIf we all got the power, or whatever, whatâs happened to her?â
âWhat if her mind couldnât handle it?â Adie replied. âWhat if she just wasnât strong enough and the power has warped her brain?â
âI donât feel powerful,â said Grace.
âMe neither,â said Rachel. âI donât think weâve got anything.â
âSo how do we fix Una?â asked Jenny.
âAnd reverse that stupid love spell,â nodded Grace.
âI thought youâd be happy that it worked,â said Rachel.
âNope,â said Grace, dropping her uneaten ham sandwich back into her lunch box. âItâs just too weird.â

For Grace the rest of the day was a horrible blur of avoiding both Una and, now, James. As she dragged her feet on the walk home, she couldnât decide which one was creeping her out the most. Jamesâs unashamed stares and
