Deirdre take a photo of the slippers outside?â
Bess gasped. âShe must have taken the slippers from the studio!â she exclaimed.
Georgeâs eyes widened. âMaybe Deirdre is the slipper thief!â she said.
Nancy peered at the screen. âGeorge, can you make this photo bigger?â she asked.
âNo problem,â George said.
Georgeâs fingers flew over the keyboard as she zoomed the photo to 150 percent, then 200 percent. âIs that big enough for you?â she asked Nancy.
Nancy nodded. âPerfect! Now, can you print it out?â
George went into the print menu and hit several keys. Nancyâs printer whirred to life. A minute later it spit out a color copy of Deirdreâs photo. The copy was twice the original size of the photo.
Nancy studied the printout. âNone of the heart-shaped rhinestones are missing,â she said after a moment. âThat means this photo was taken before the rhinestone got into Gregoryâs bag somehow.â
âMaybe Deirdre stole the slippers, then planted the rhinestone in Gregoryâs bag to make him look guilty,â Bess suggested.
âMaybe,â Nancy agreed.
âDeirdreâs photo is an important clue,â George said. âI have a feeling the Clue Crew is getting close to solving the case!â
âYes!â Bess said, giving George a high five.
âI hope you guys are right,â Nancy told her friends.
On Friday during recess, Nancy, George, and Bess found Deirdre on the swings. Madison waspushing her. The day was cool but sunny. A slight breeze stirred the leaves on the trees.
âHigher, higher!â Deirdre shouted to Madison.
Madison pushed Deirdre extra hard. Then she caught sight of Nancy and her friends and stopped.
âMadison, push!â Deirdre shouted.
âUh, Deirdre? Weâve got company,â Madison said.
Deirdre glanced down. She frowned when she saw Nancy and the others.
âOh,â Deirdre muttered. â You guys.â
âHello to you, too!â Bess called out cheerfully.
Deirdre dug her shoes into the dirt to slow down the swing. Dust sprayed up into the air. The swing came to a stop.
âDid you see the late-breaking story on my website?â Deirdre asked the girls with a sly smile.
âWe sure did,â Bess replied.
âIt was a really interesting read,â George added.
âAnd you had a really interesting photo to go with it,â Nancy piped up.
Deirdre beamed. âThanks! I took it myself, of course.â
Nancy smiled. âOf course. Right after you took the slippers from Mr. McGuireâs studio.â
âMore like stole ,â Bess said meaningfully.
âWhat made you do it, Deirdre?â George asked her.
Deirdreâs cheeks flushed red. âWhat are you talking about? Iâm not the slipper thief! I just took a photo, thatâs all,â she insisted.
âDeirdreâs totally innocent,â Madison defended her friend. Nancy noticed that Madison kept her eyes on the ground, though. Is she hiding something? Nancy wondered.
âI think you guys are taking this Clue Crew stuff a little too seriously,â Deirdre said, her tone turning mean. âI mean, itâs not like youâre real detectives or anything.â
Nancy dug into her pocket and pulled out the folded-up computer printout. She unfolded it and held it up for Deirdre to see.
âWell, this is a real clue,â Nancy said coolly.âAnd according to this clue, you took this photo outside. Which means that you took the slippers from the studio.â
Madison gasped. âDeirdre, we didnât think of that,â she said, sounding panicked.
âBe quiet, Madison,â Deirdre whispered.
âSo you are the slipper thief,â Nancy said to Deirdre. âMaybe you stole the slippers just so you could write a killer story about it for your website!â
Deirdre got up from the swing. She had a
