wonât be able to serve dinner tonight. And please tell Loreen to send everyone home.â
Shawn stayed in the kitchen with the firefighters while, outside in the dining room, Nancy found Bess talking to Elliot.
âWhere is everybody?â Nancy asked.
âLoreen has them doing inventory downstairs,â Bess said. âThe sight of her staff standing around doing nothing drives her nuts.â
âLoreen is actually quite nice,â Elliot disagreed. âItâs only lately that sheâs been, well, irritable.â
âDo you know why?â Nancy asked him.
Elliot shook his head. âNo, not really.â
Remembering that she wanted to keep her identity as a detective secret, Nancy quickly controlled her impulse to barrage Elliot with questions.
Suddenly Elliotâs face lit up. âI know where Iâve seen you before. Iâve been trying to figure it out all day. I saw your picture in the paper. Youâre Nancy Drew, the detective.â He hunched his shoulders and leaned forward conspiratorially. âAre you investigating all the weird stuff thatâs been happening here?â
Nancy shook her head. âJust trying to earn some extra money, thatâs all.â
âReally?â Elliot asked doubtfully.
âSure,â Nancy said lightly. âPlease donât tell anyone about me, okay? I want to fit in here, and Iâm willing to work hard and do my share.â
âYour secret is safe with me,â Elliot assured her.
Nancy gave Bess the message from Shawn about calling the reservations, and Bess went off to find the maître dâ. âNow I have to tell Loreen to send everyone home,â Nancy added with a sigh.
âIâll tell her,â Elliot offered, getting up. âI have to talk to her about something else, anyway. Iâll see you later.â
As soon as he had gone, Bess reappeared. âI think you should drop this case, and Iâm ready to quit the coatroom,â she said to Nancy. âWhoever is doing all this stuff means business. We could have been killed in there.â
Nancy nodded gravely. âI know. At first I thought it was a disgruntled employee playing pranks. But itâs become a lot more serious than that.â
âThen youâll give up the case?â Bess asked.
Nancy shook her head. âYou know me. I canât give up just when things are beginning to heat up. Iâd lie awake nights thinking about it, wondering who was responsible. Besides, Iâd like to help Shawn, if I can.â
âWhich means I canât quit, either,â Bess said with a sigh.
âItâs okay with me if you want to,â Nancy told her.
âForget it,â Bess scoffed. âI got you into this. Iâm not leaving you all alone. Let me go help Lee cancel those reservations, and then weâll get out of here. I just want to go home and soak all of this soot out of my pores.â
Nancy was about to follow Bess when she saw Shawn coming out of the kitchen. âIâll catch up with you in a minute,â she told Bess.
âThat was just what I needed,â Shawn said, rubbing his eyes wearily. âOver a thousand dollars in fines.â
âOuch,â Nancy sympathized. âDidnât you tell them you suspect arson?â
Shawn shook his head. âI decided not to. I donât need that kind of story getting around. If customers hear thereâs an arsonist with a gripe against this place, theyâll never come here.â
âI see your point,â Nancy said. âDo the firefighters know how the fire started?â
âNo, but they think it started with the linens in the cabinet,â Shawn replied.
âThose linens burst into flame awfully fast,â Nancy said, remembering that she and Bess had only stepped away for a minute or two when the fire started. âIâll bet they were soaked with something. I didnât smell gasoline, lighter
