âI like the way the second baseman moves when he goes after a grounder,â I said.
âYeah, heâs really fluid. I wish Iâd brought my dadâs binoculars.â
âWeâll be able to see them better once they start batting practice.â Since we were on the second row, just to the right of home plate, weâd have a great view.
âHow do you like having a guy in the house?â Bird asked.
âHard to say. Jason is really quiet. Forsome reason, I thought guys were noisy.â
âIâm sure real brothers are. These guys are probably just trying to be polite.â
âI guess. He played pitch with Dad last night.â
âMust have been a rush for your dad.â
I smiled. âYeah, it was.â Although Dad, loyal as ever, had stopped by my bedroom before going to bed to let me know I was still his favorite ball-tosser. âThe guyâs goodââheâd winked at meââbut no one can replace you.â
His words had made me wish Iâd tossed the ball around with them, but I didnât want Jason to see me as just one of the guys. If one of his teammates asked about me, I didnât want his recommendation to be, âShe has a great arm.â
âIs Mac working?â I asked.
âNo, heâs still looking for something, although I get the impression working isnât high on his priority list. Heâs all about the baseball.â
âKinda like us, huh?â
Bird grinned. âYeah.â
âDo you think guys prefer girls who arenât?â
She looked at me. âWhy would they?â
âI donât know. I justâ¦â
âWant a boyfriend?â
âYeah, some sort of validation that itâs okay Iâm not a beauty queen.â
âTiffany doesnât have a boyfriend, either.â
âNo, but a lot of guys hang around her. She had a date to the prom.â
She had been crowned prom queen, actually.
âShe doesnât seem real to me,â Bird said. âYou, on the other hand, are very real.â She pressed up against my shoulder, pointed toward the field. âYou know, they call third base the âhot corner.â I think our third baseman might be the reason.â
She was right. We had more important things to discuss than my sister. We had guys to rank, score, and rate.
âI never realized what a busy schedule they have, with games, practice, and work,â I said. âWe need some real face time with these guys, but I donât know when weâre going to get it.â
We got it a lot sooner than weâd expected. When the coach had yelled that practice wasover, Mac had removed his catcherâs mask, walked to the backstop, grinned at Bird and me (at least I think the grin was for me, too), and said, âSome of us are going out for pizza. Why donât you come?â
So, Bird and I found ourselves sharing a table and pitchers of root beer with fifteen guys. How cool was that?
I could picture the field during practice and exactly where each guy had been positioned. So I knew the blond on my right was the shortstop and the dark-haired guy on my left played third base. Thanks to the roster Iâd almost completely memorized, I knew most of the guysâ names, too. Shortstop was Chase, the third baseman was Alan.
In baseball, the catcher is also known as the field general, and it was like Mac was in charge here, too. As the guys had been pulling tables together, heâd yelled, âBirdâs with me, Daniâs with Jason!â and heâd pointed fingers at usâlike a flight attendant directing passengersâ attention to the emergency exit doorsâso the guys would know who was who. Of course, he didnât mean like boyfriendâgirlfriend. He wasreferring to our families hosting them.
I wasnât sure how he knew I was with Jason. Maybe Jason had said something on the field or maybe
