some damn horse.â
âOh yeah, spending time with her will be a real sacrifice. She might not be your usual fare of perfectly put-together arm candy with a law degree. But sheâs got thoroughbred legs and an incredibly fineââ
âHey,â Kate said, as she stepped out onto the porch. âThe only ass youâre allowed to make Neanderthal comments about is mine.â She glanced at Rafe. âAlthough heâs right. Iâve seen her in riding pants. Iâd kill for her ass.â
Mac put his hand proprietarily on Kateâs backside. âYour ass is spectacular.â
She grinned at him. âYou just want to get laid.â
âWell, yeah, but I could probably manage that without lying, so you know I mean it.â
âMen and their logic.â When Mac went to take his hand away, she immediately pulled it around her shoulder. âBut Iâll take it, Iâll take it.â Tucked under Macâs arm, she looked at Rafe. âWhen Elena told me youâd asked for lessons, I almost choked. You hate horses. Whatâs going on?â
Heâd known this was coming since the moment three days ago when heâd apparently lost what was left of his mind and propositioned Elena. In more ways than one. Which hadnât remotely been his intent when heâd walked out to that barn. Heâd been regretting it ever since. Never more so than right this second. âI donât hate horses. Theyâre beautiful animals. I just donât see the need to climb up on the back of one. But thatâs not the point here. The point is, I think something else is going on with your new manager. Either sheâs in trouble, or running to avoid it. But somethingâs not right. And I donât want her troubles becoming your troubles.â
Mac glanced down at Kate. âHeâs just jealous because heâs around us too much. Now heâs hot for a barn chick who isnât his normal glamazon type, so heâs projecting some sort of crisis so he can write it off as a work-induced fascination.â
Kate listened to Mac with an indulgent smile, then turned a quite serious expression to Rafe. âWhat makes you think sheâs hiding something?â
âHey,â Mac said, obviously put out by being brushed off.
Kate leaned up and kissed him on the jaw. âI love you, but youâre reacting like a guy, and not like a business owner. If something is going on, then I need to know about it. My kids and my camp come first. I like Elena. A lot. In fact, sheâs the best thing thatâs happened around here in awhile.â She looked back to Rafe. âAlmost too good to be true. Iâve been saying that since the start. Iâd really hate for there to be something to that.â
Mac rolled his eyes, but accepted defeat and turned to Rafe. âWhen did this amazing insight take place? Youâve evidently had your eye on her since she got here and that was only a few months ago. I was wondering when youâd finally get over yourself and make a move.â
âIâm not âmaking a move,ââ Rafe said, though that was precisely what heâd done. He could tell himself that this was about Kate and protecting her interests, and therefore Dalton Downsâ interests, but that didnât remotely explain why he couldnât stop thinking about Elena Caulfield. âMaybe the reason Iâve been noticing her is because my instincts have been telling me something isnât right. And after what I overheard the other day, I think thatâs more important than whatever attraction there might be.â
Now Kateâs eyebrows lifted. âMight be?â She avoided Macâs elbow nudge, keeping her now openly speculative attention on Rafe. âSo, what, you think women who work in barns and muck out stalls arenât good enough for you?â
âDonât go all feminist rant on me. I never said that.
