Reading Road, right down the street from the school. The sign on the front says âexpress deliveries,ââ the boy on the other end of the line told him.
âOh, I know where youâre talking about. That delivery service went out of business last year. No problem.â
âBe there Monday at three-thirty P.M .,â the young mancontinued. âWe will work on the toy drive then. You may bring a guest if you like.â
âThatâs straight! Iâll be there.â
âAnd Mr. Prescott?â The voice sounded so serious.
Jericho hesitated. âYes?â
âMonday night. Midnight. Same place. Bring no one. Tell no one. This is
not
about toys.â
âHuh? I donât understand.â
âSee you on Monday.â The caller hung up.
Jericho sat holding the phone a moment. What was
that
about? He dialed Joshâs number.
âYou get the call from the Warriors, man?â Jericho asked as soon as Josh picked up.
âYeah, about ten minutes ago. This Warriors of Distinction thing is going to be awesome, I think,â Josh replied. âKofi told me they had just called him, too.â Josh was silent for a moment. âUh, they say anything to you about something at midnight?â
âUh, yeah, I guess. Whatâs up with that?â
âI guess weâll find out soon enough.â
âIâll have to sneak out. No way is Geneva gonna let me out that late.â
âMe too, but I really donât care. As long as I get inâthatâs all that matters,â Josh said seriously.
âWhy?â Jericho asked.
âForget it, man,â Josh answered, brushing off Jerichoâs question. âNovember is so excited. Sheâs already talking about what sheâs gonna wear to the Warriors of Distinction dance. You better get yourself together and stopacting like a third-grader every time you see Arielle.â
With a resolve and confidence he did not feel, Jericho boasted, âArielle is just another honey. Iâm gettinâ ready to call her right now.â
âGo for it, my man. Iâll catch you later.â
Josh hung up and Jericho stared at the phone for a full ten minutes before he pushed the first button to dial Arielleâs number. He hung up twice, then, before he could change his mind, he quickly dialed Arielleâs number. A childâs voice answered.
âHello, may I speak to Arielle?â Jericho said, his heart pounding.
âArielle! Thereâs some boy on the phone for you!â the kid shouted on the other end.
âHello?â
âHey, Arielle. This is Jerichoâuhâfrom school. You sure got a loud little brother!â
Arielle laughed. âThatâs my little sister, Kiki. They ought to hire her to announce for the Cincinnati Reds!â
âHow old is she?â
âSeven, going on seventeen. She thinks she is so grown! Yesterday she asked me to take her shopping for a bra!â
Jericho chuckled. âI got two little stepbrothers underfoot here. Theyâd both be driving if they could. They canât wait until I get a car so I can drive them to all their games and practices and stuff.â
âYou getting a car?â
âNot likely. Christmas is coming, but there is no way theyâll be squeezing a car under the tree. Moneyâs been alittle tight. Iâm gonna get me a job so I can buy my own car!â Jericho stated.
âThatâs a lot of hamburgers to flip.â
âYou got that right!â
âHey, Jericho, we saw a couple of the Warriors of Distinction talkinâ to you and Kofi and Josh at lunch. Whatâs up with that?â
âWell, thatâs one reason I called. They asked us to help out in the Christmas toy drive this year.â
âThatâs awesome! Doesnât that mean you get asked to pledge, that youâll be a Warrior? I think the Warriors are, like, off the hook. I mean, they wear really sharp
