lined Ikeaâs mouth in pale mauve. âIt takes away from your eyes, Ike. Your eyes are your main feature.â
Parker sat down on the dainty chair beside the sink and stared at Plumâs steady hand until her nerves settled. (Who knew that lip liner could be so relaxing?)
âI yove your yew yweater, âarker!â Ikea said without moving her lips. âItâs yrès yute.â
âYours is yrès yuter!â Parker joked back as she checked out her no-makeup-look in the mirror. She wondered how her vermilion margin looked, whatever that was.
âOMGasp!â Kiki flew into La Cachette, went right for a stall and didnât even shut the door. âI just saw Tinsley who just saw Cosima who heard from Brie who just heard from her brotherâ¦â Kiki flushed the toilet with a push of her foot. âThat Tribb is totally asking Parker to Fall Soshâ¦â She washed her hands, fluffed her hair, and sat up on the counter. âWhich means we need to start shopping for a dressâlike yesterday .â
Kikiâs hands were flapping up and down by her shoulders so fast that she looked like she might take off. It was a move the Lylas (including Kiki herself) called âthe Birdie.â Just the mention of Tribbâs name made Parkerâs face turn bright red.
âGuys donât think about that kind of stuff until like the day before,â Plum said, pulling a linen hand cloth off the neat stack by the sink. âThatâs just the Gossip Vultures circling around their next meal.â She dabbed the corner over Ikeaâs lips.
âMaybe heâs pre-planning,â Ikea said. âWhich is super-cute.â
Parker was barely listening. She was thinking about Tribb and the first kiss and the coordinated outfits and the gardenia corsage. She was crossing her fingers and toes. She was making a secret wish.
âYou okay, Park?â Plum asked as she put away her beauty tools.
Parker gulped down and tried to say something that might make sense but nothing came out.
âSheâs okay,â Kiki said pulling out her sunglasses and fitting them snugly on her face. âArenât you?â
âBut of course.â Parker spiraled her hand in the air and smiled. âItâs me, remember?â The Lylas stood side by side in front of the mirror and took a moment to breathe. âOkay,â Parker said. âLetâs do this thing.â
Chapter 5
Parker adjusted her tote high on her shoulder so she could walk down the hallway toward the eighth grade lockers without ruining the full effect of her outfit. She walked first (kind of a rule but not really official or anything), Kiki second, Plum third, and Ikea last.
Friends were everywhere.
âParker! Kiki! Plum! Ikea!â
Everyone shouted their names in unison. Parkerâs head turned left and right. The syllables started sounding like something you could dance toâthe chorus of a Gwen Stefani song.
Avery Bitterman came up and threw her arms around Parker. âLove the tan! Real â¦of course!â
âGreat new backpack, Aves!â Parker made sure to sound really excited even though she and Avery werenât exactly best friends or anything. âTrès cute.â
âDouble smiley-face,â Ikea added.
âReally?â Averyâs own smiley-face brightened. Sheâd gone up a notch on the ladder just from that. âThanks, you guys.â
Duncan Middlestat didnât say hello even though he clearly wanted to. After getting his braces off at the end of last year, Duncan was poised to move into the upper third of the populadder, although he didnât know it yet. He still thought of himself in a lower tier; it would take him a while to mentally catch up to the physical improvements. But he was definitely headed in the right direction.
âDunkers!â Plum said. âHawt new jacket!â
âItâs smashing .â Kikiâs
