something because of the museum break-in.â
âItâs true,â Joe observed. âYour dadâs disappearance and the wrecked museum seem as though theyâve got to be linked. Anyway, letâs just say the two events happening on the same night make for a weird coincidence.â
Alicia nodded in agreement. âThatâs what I thought, too. When I called the police, they said I could file a missing-persons report, but Iâd have to wait twenty-four hours for him to be officially considered missing.â
âDid you talk to Detective Crespi?â Frank asked.
âYes,â Alicia said. âHe was sympathetic and everything, but he said that my dad might havejust been out with friends and that I shouldnât worry. He told me to make sure that my dad called him the minute he got home. He seemed more concerned that Dad wasnât around to answer questions about the museum vandalism.â
âAnd Crespi didnât speculate that the two events might be linked?â Frank pressed.
Alicia shook her head. âNo. The vandalism was on his mind, not my dad.â
âWell, his tune might change in another twenty-four hours,â Joe said grimly. âThough I hope Crespi is rightâthat your dad was just out with friends.â
Alicia drew a deep breath, then let it out in a slow sigh. âThatâs not Dadâs styleâto party all night,â she said. âAnd even if he had been with friends, heâd call me to let me know heâd be home late.â
Frank knew Alicia was right. He could understand Geovanis staying out late with friends, but it was odd that he hadnât called by now. Something may have happened to himâeither an accident, or a crime.
âAnyway,â Alicia went on, âI barely slept all night, and by nine this morning when Dad still wasnât home, I knew something was really wrong. Iâm convinced heâs been kidnappedâand that Roberto Scarlattiâs the culprit!â
âAlicia,â Frank said, âyou canât jump to conclusions like that. I agree your dad could be insome sort of trouble. But he may have been in a car accident or something. Have you checked the hospital?â
âOf course,â Alicia replied, looking exasperated. âAnd heâs not there. Besides, the police would have told me that. Also, Jonah Ferrier told me that my red Jeep, which Dad had borrowed last night because his car was being fixed, is still sitting outside the Ferrier house.â
Frank and Joe were silent for a moment while they thought about Aliciaâs story. Finally Joe said, âLetâs say your dad was kidnapped. Maybe the guy kidnapped him first, then went into the museum to trash it. But why?â
â If it was the same person,â Frank pointed out. âWeâre just guessing hereâwe have no evidence yetââ
âBut Iâd say my guess is a pretty educated one,â Joe cut in. âWhat are the odds that Geovanis would get kidnapped and the museum vandalized all in one night, by two different guys with different motives?â
Frank shrugged. âI see what you mean.â
âIt must be Roberto Scarlatti, then,â Alicia pressed. âHeâs the only enemy my father has. Everyone else loves him.â
Frank rubbed his chin thoughtfully. It may seem like Geovanis is a popular guy, he thought, but that doesnât mean he has no other enemies.
âYou guys will help me investigate, right?âAlicia pleaded. âYouâre my only hope at this point.â
âOf course we will,â Frank said, smiling. âAnd we should get going right awayâto chase down Scarlatti and also talk to Jonah Ferrier.â
âSo you agree with me about Scarlatti?â Alicia asked hopefully.
âKind of,â Frank answered. âI agree that Scarlatti is jealous of your dad, and his behavior yesterday in the museum points to him as
