father is very well off, and he has a sister who dropped out of college last year. The kid had some sort of mental problems. Seems to have been a breakdown that was pretty likely triggered by a serious Tek addiction.â
âTek,â said Jake quietly. âBut Grossman himself has no involvement, no connection with the stuff?â
âNone that I could unearth. But, again, itâs something to dig into further.â
âDid you really threaten him?â
âI threatened to coldcock him if he didnât quit harassing Kay.â He held up a fist. âI might well have slugged him. But shooting a guy down with a lazgunânope.â
âAnd you were nowhere near his place last night?â
âNever been there, Jake,â he said.
âThe security tapes from your house show you coming home around four in the morning,â said Jake. âThey were faked, obviously, but when were they substituted for the real ones?â
âIâve been thinking about that quite a lot,â admitted the agency boss. âI never heard a damn thing and no alarm went off. Ambrose, my valet, was found sprawled on his backside in the kitchen. Could be Drexler and his crew did that, but maybe it was done earlier by parties unknown.â
âLieutenant Drexler is not an especially lovable guy,â said Jake, âbut I donât see him being directly involved in a frame.â
âI wouldnât think so, either,â said Bascom. âBut we have to check up on him, too. Cops, as shocking as it may seem to a sensitive lad such as you, have been known to sell out for sufficient kale.â
âWhen are you expecting to get out of here?â
âKayâs working on it. Hopefully before sundown.â
âMeantime, Sid and I will get going.â
Bascom held up his hand. âCouple of more things, Jake,â he said. âFirstly, until Iâm sprung, please, try to get along with Roy Anselmo.â
âWeâre as friendly as can be, Chief.â
âIâm sure, yeah,â said Bascom. âAnd thenâwell, Kacey dropped in on me right before you called.â
âI know, I collided with her outside.â He pointed a thumb at the door.
âThis is where, if you would, Jake, you can do me a favor,â confided Bascom, leaning forward in the chair. âKacey and I havenât been very damned close for a lot of years. Iâm never going to agree with her politically, since sheâs a wild-eyed nut in that sphere. I would, though, like to see her more often than I do. After this mess is over ⦠well, Iâd like to stay in touch. This family crisis has brought her back into my circle and Iâd like her to stay a mite closer from here on.â
âShe wants me to involve her in the investigation.â
Bascom rubbed his hands, slowly, together. âI donât think Kacey ought to become deeply mixed up in this business,â he said.
âBut you donât want her to feel sheâs left out, either.â
âThatâs about it. Iâd be much obliged if youâd keep her distracted but not unhappy.â
âDonât they ask goats to do this when they want to catch tigers?â
Bascom smiled. âYouâre very good at dealing with wacky women, Jake,â he told his operative. âRoy Anselmo canât cope with Kacey if she starts poking around at the agency.â
Jake said, âIâll give it a try.â

WHEN the big robot rubbed his copper-plated hands together, they produced an echoing rasping sound. âThis is swell, kids,â he said in his deep rattling voice. âWe just installed this dingus and itâs supposed to be hot stuff. Unlike other identity imagers, this baby canââ
âHey, weâve got a class to get to in about sixteen minutes, Rex,â said Dan, impatient.
Rex/GK-30 chuckled. âYou flesh-and-blood types worry too much about a
