ask for someone who knew how to party better than Nate. âOkay.â
âWow, did you really have to think on it?â
âYes,â she said. âIâm notâ¦I donât make snap decisions.â
âIâll remember that. Do you need to check in with your sister?â
âYes. Why donât you come and hang with us for a little while?â
âThat wasnât what I had in mind.â
âWhat did you have in mind?â she asked. She had no idea why sheâd agreed to this and she might be in over her head. She should have eased herself back into the dating scene with one of Courtneyâs financial analyst friends or someone that worked at her sisterâs law office instead of jumping straight from stay at home every night to Nate Stern.
âYou and me burning up the dance floor.â
She looked up at him. âIâm not your kind of girl, you know that, right?â
âNo, I donât. I think you and I are going to get along very well.â
âThatâs what Iâm afraid of,â she said under her breath. But in for a penny in for a pound, she thought. She wanted this night and this man so she was going to go for it.
âCome on, Nate. See if you can keep up.â
He laughed a full robust laugh. It made her smile just to hear it. He was that kind of guy. The kind that knew how to enjoy life, and she realized she needed someone like that. She needed to learn how to go with the flow.
He took her hand in his big one and led the way into the club, over to where Marcia and Courtney waited. She tried to tell herself that she was in control of this but she had the feeling that Nate was and she wasnât sure what the outcome would be.
Â
Marcia and Courtney left at midnight but Nate wasnât ready to let Jen go yet.
âStay,â he said when they were in the lobby under the beautiful Chihuly glass sculpture depicting the night sky.
âIâm not sure that is wise,â she said. âI have to work tomorrow.â
âNot until the evening. Stay and play with me, Jen,â he said.
âIâ¦okay, why not? What will we do now?â
âThereâs an after-party for the band. Itâs up in your courtâthe rooftop club.â
âOkay. But I canât stay past two,â she said.
âI wonât hold it against you if you change your mind.â
âAre you really that confident of yourself?â she asked.
âOf course. I know that you are enjoying yourself and your sister told me that you donât have enough fun.â
âShe said that?â
âYes.â
âWhat else did she say?â
âThat you were her little sister and sheâd hurt me if I hurt you.â
Jen flushed. âSheâs just overprotective. Our mom worked a lot when we were growing up and Marcia was the one who always had to watch me.â
âSome habits never die,â Nate said. âItâs the same with Cam and me.â
âI can see that about him. Heâs like everyoneâs older brother here.â
âHe takes care of family. If you cross himâ¦well, I wouldnât.â
âMe, either,â Jen said.
âDo you know him well?â Nate asked. It seemed odd to him that heâd just met Jen today and that his brother might have known her longer.
âNot really. But he asked me to serve on the tenth anniversary celebration committee.â
âYes, I am to be on that committee, too, so we will be seeing a lot more of each other.â
She glanced down and he wondered at her expression. But then T.J. came over and slung an arm around his shoulder. âBuddy, howâs it going?â
âGood,â he said, realizing T.J. was drunk. He was reluctant to stop talking to Jen, now that he was finally learning a little about her, but T.J. needed him.
âLetâs find a table to sit down and chat.â
âNah, Iâm making the rounds.
