again. âThen why not tell your husband?â
âBecause heâll start fussing,â Tory explained. âHeâs bad enough as it is, I can just imagine what he would be like if he truly thought he had cause for concern.â
Candace gave a heavy, sympathetic sigh. âI donât feel comfortable withholding information from the Governor ââ
âBut this is not an affair of state, Candace!â Tory tried one final personal appeal. âWhat if I were to promise not to go back to Devaglen? Then could we drop the subject?â
âWhat did you call that place?â Candace queried, curious that the name had rolled off Toryâs tongue so naturally. âDevaglen?â
âDid I?â Tory held a hand to her mouth, just as astonished by the piece of information her subconscious had spat up. âYes, I did, didnât I?â
âIs that what you think the entity was, a Deva?â Candace asked, thinking Tory must know her own reasons for calling the spot what she had.
âPerhaps,â Tory uttered as her eyes glazed over and her thoughts wafted away elsewhere. âI need to speak with Noah ââ
âOh damn, thatâs right,â Candace said abruptly, frightening Tory from her speculative trance. âI told Noah of your encounter,â she explained. âHeâs the only one Iâve told ⦠oh, except Cadfan. As he is your physician I felt I had to tell him,â she justified.
âIs that all?â When Candace nodded to confirm, Tory breathed a sigh of relief and waved off the concern. âNot to worry, as they are two of the three men I need to consult on this matter.â
âThe third being?â
âThe Head of the Mind Sciences,â Tory enlightened. âMy old friend Thomas Mateus.â
âThais, the Centaur?â Candace asked. She hadnât had too much to do with the Shaman, although sheâd worked with his Chosen mate, Hero, for many years before the time of the Gathering.
âThe one and only,â Tory confirmed.
Thais and his mate Hero were the only souls amongst the Chosen Ones who werenât Homo sapiens. No one knew why this was, bar the Centaurs themselves and the Lord Master Enki. As with all the Chosen Ones, Thais and Hero could assume any form they chose, and so employed the more compact Homo sapiens form for convenience when in the city. When in the wild, however, the Shamans assumed a myriad forms and were both very active in the wildlife protection programs and had incorporated it into their esoteric work.
âThais is the oldest of all the Chosen Ones,â Tory advised. âPerhaps even older than the first intelligent being of our kind.â
All went quiet as Tory got lost in thought once again and Candace reviewed the situation. âYou will keep me informed of your discoveries,â Candace commanded more than asked. âIf you will not advise the Governor, then I must insist that ââ
Tory smiled and held up a hand in truce. âI promise to keep you informed.â

CONSCIENCE
âB rian!â Albeit confused by the Vice-Governorâs presence, Maelgwn was pleased to see him as he joined Brian in the council chamber.
âSurprise!â said Brian meekly, before moving to greet his brother-in-law in their customary fashion â gripping each otherâs wrist, instead of palm, to shake in greeting.
âIt is, actually.â Maelgwnâs tone was concerned, although his welcoming smile remained constant. âYou havenât started a war, have you?â
âNot I,â Brian advised, cocking an eye. âNot yet.â
âSounds like I need to sit down,â Maelgwn considered as he motioned Brian to join him at the conference table.
âA stiff drink probably wouldnât go astray either,â Brian mumbled in conclusion, and Maelgwn looked at him, thinking the situation must be dire. âMy news
