the Wild Pack territory. Her fur bristled with nerves, but her head was held high and proud, and between her jaws hung a sleek, plump rabbit.
âWhat in the name of the Sky-Dogsââ The deep powerful bark was full of shock, but Sweet didnât flinch. She recognized Fieryâs voice, and for all his size he was a fair dog. He wouldnât kill her. Not outright, not straightaway.
Dogs were gathering around her now, some snarling, some stunned into silence, some exchanging glances of disbelief. The red Beta barged forward, butting smaller dogs aside.
âWhat are you doing back here, Bony Dog?â Her voice was filled with contempt. âYouâve just made a big mistake. And your last!â
âWait, Beta.â Fiery shoved easily through to her side, the smaller dogs moving hurriedly out of his way. âLook, sheâs caught a rabbit. By herself.â
âThatâs pretty impressive.â The white-and-tan dog nodded reluctantly.
âIâm certainly impressed,â said a black-and-white dog who was fat with puppies. She leaned against Fieryâs flank. âWe could use her, Beta. Thereâll be more mouths to feed soon.â
The red dog turned on them all, snarling. âWhich means we donât need another! Our Pack has all the dogs it needs!â
âThat,â said a commanding voice, âis not your decision.â
The half wolf Alpha stepped forward through the ranks, lashing his bushy tail as he watched Sweetâs eyes. He circled her, looking her up and down till Sweetâs hide began to itch. But she stayed silent.
âLook at this,â he told his Pack. âNot only an impressive catch, but the strength of will to carry it here without eating it.â He nudged Sweetâs bony ribs with his muzzle. âAnd itâs not as if she isnât hungry. Thatâs the kind of discipline I like.â
âYouâre not serious?â yelped Beta. âWe know nothing about her!â
Alpha looked from his Beta back to Sweet. Thoughtfully hecocked his head.
âWe know sheâs a good hunter,â he murmured. âSheâs clearly respectful, and has a sense of honor. What more could we ask for in a dog?â
âI donât believe this!â snapped Beta furiously, her hackles springing up. âYou canâtââ
âCanât?â echoed Alpha, a dangerous edge to his silky voice. âAre you telling me I canât do something, Beta? Because itâs not the first time youâve questioned my authority.â His growl deepened. âItâs not the first time youâve betrayed your delusion that you are Alpha here.â
âNo, Iââ
âDo you know better than I do? Do you think youâd make a better Alpha, perhaps? Would you like to . . . challenge me?â
Beta ducked her head, lowering her forequarters and backing off. Sweet could not miss the flash of terror in her eyes, and no wonder. The half wolf was much bigger and more powerful than the red dogâshe wouldnât stand a chance if it came to a fight.
Alpha gave a snort of dismissal, and turned back to Sweet. âYou may stay for now,â he told her. âProve yourself a valuable member of this Pack, and a loyal oneââhe shot a glare at Betaââand you can stay for good.â
Murmurs of agreement went around the Pack as Sweet dipped her head in gratitude. The pregnant black-and-white dog came forward to lick her nose.
âIâm Moon. Iâll show you where youâll sleep,â she told Sweet cheerfully. âWelcome to our Pack!â
Sweet felt a wave of relief. Iâve found a Pack. Iâll howl again at the next full moon! But she couldnât miss the glance Beta shot at her. As she turned and stalked away, the red dogâs eyes glowed with resentful hatred.
CHAPTER FIVE
âCome on, Sweet. Really attack me! I know you can do
